I run the gamut from both sides. As a professional firefighter, (17 years) and a long tenured heavy tow operator for 30+ years, I have bore witness to and been party to idiots behind the wheel. I have had tractor trailers smash into large wreckers while we a rolling one back on its wheels. Cars smash into tow trucks while working on the side of the road. I have extricated hundreds of people and bodies from the most gruesome wrecks one could imagine. Luckily I have had only one incident with a state trooper and it never escalated to the point of ridiculousness like the one referenced here. Not sure about Cali, but here, when we arrive on scene we assume complete command and control and own the scene, like it or not. Historically, all the local cops can't go out of their way enough to help out in any way they can and most troopers are the same. Unfortunately CHP seems to split from that as they have arrested several firefighters that were securing an MVA scene so they could work in a safe zone. This latest clown and the other handful of idiots really bring dishonor to all of CHP. I wonder if that officer was told that interfering with a firefighter while in the performance of his duties is a felony?
. At the end of the video did you see all the cruisers shutting down lanes of travel?

What a tool.

We have all had a bad day at work or made a mistake, I am sure, he just made his in front of a news camera.
Dad always said that just because someone has "Doctor" in front of their name, doesn't mean they are a good one...
It's tough being a cop, I get it, everyone loves a fireman, but not so with the Police, so I get it. Also, we just saw the handcuffs come out, not sure what was said or mumbled before that.
I just can't trust the news for the whole story. I still support that it was inappropriate on the scene of the accident to arrest the FF....

I agree that we all have bad days at work. I also agree that a title does not imply professionalism. To be clear, not everyone loves a firefighter, to most we are just a tax burden. Blue and red blood runs deep in my family, brother and sister cops in Texas, brother on the job with me here and cousins on neighboring city pd's. I get it loud and clear. I know of 4 separate incidents of CHP arresting or detaining a firefighter or fire officer from an accident scene in the last 10 years for blocking travel lanes. There was also an incident in either Montana or Missouri, don't remember which state. I love it when a trooper or highway patrol says, "get my highway open", or "not on my highway". Yeah, go wait in your cruiser officer. (Substitute officer with profanity.)
There have been times I have directed FF to move the vehicles... one that comes to mind was a rollover in the median, I-70 west of Topeka..
they were still extricating a occupant when I ASKED them to move the trucks onto the shoulder... rush hour traffic, bad weather.. dark night, and trucks were just over the top of a hill for westbound traffic.
We had two near misses as drivers came over the hill and found the inside lane blocked, even tho we had flares out and all...
There was plenty of room on the wide shoulder, and the accident scene itself was in the middle of the 75-100 ft wide grass median.
I think the only difference was I worded it as a request rather than an order tho it amounted to the same thing. Not sure what I would have done had anyone refused..
I have the greatest respect for FF's in general, having worked side by side with so many of them at accidents, medical calls, structure fires and such..however there are some who are just as bad as all of you are judging this CHP officer to be. I have arrested FF's following the scene being secured..one for responding DUI, another for reckless( the guy ran a mom and kids off the road responding to the scene..)
I was not there, and while I do NOT agree in any way shape or form with what this officer did based on what I have read online, I HAVE been around the block enough to know that there is often more to a story than gets reported, and I haven't developed my mind reading skill enough yet to be so bold as to "know" that this officer was merely "power-tripping" or being a jerk for the heck of it..although I do admit that he certainly seems to be..
I think some of y'all need to think before ya post..
"One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch"
and just for the record, "some of my best friends are firemen"...teeheehee
OK I m done with this....

The general concensus here is the cop is wrong. Multiple articles report the same thing. The engineer correctly refused to move the piece without orders from his Captian and in violation of department sop's. Would CHP claimed responsibility if that apparatus was moved then a vehicle smashed into the ambulance. You know **** well they would not have, every bit of blame and responsibility would have been put on the operator of the apparatus.
Chris, you arrested a couple ff's, one for operating under, excellent! You did the community and that department a great service. The other for failing to drive with due regard for public safety and running a mom and kids off the road. Once again excellent. No argument there are some completely inferior individuals, (morons) wearing the title of firefighter. We have had a few come through. However to compare the scenarios is ridiculous, one is justified the other is ludicrous. Bottom line that cop is a complete tool bag, no business wearing the uniform, just like the tools you arrested.
Guess I'm spoiled seeing how the PD and Fd in my city work so well together, including the state police. Too bad something like this overshadows all dedicated hard working cops in CHP that are out there doing the job day in and day out.

Or, they'll have a car sitting on the side with its lights flashing, and the cop will be standing at the rear bumper, with the high beams shining into the eyes of everyone coming up on it.
It's like so many of them think that having flashing lights makes them immune to the laws of physics.
HvyTruck, please don't think I was justifying this CHP officer by comparing those scenarios , as I stated , I see nothing that justified his actions and it appears he was 200% wrong in how he handled it.
But by the same token, we see nothing of what transpired PRIOR to his cuffing the guy up.
All I'm saying is that some if the comments being made are way out of line and that there is likely more to the story than just that video

I didn't think that at all and understand what your saying.
On a funny note. This past friday I was on team speak while gaming on line with my brother, a Sargeant in the Fort Worth pd, we had discussed this incident prior. I brought up this debate then he told me this. Earlier in the week an ice storm rolled through that area, they were dispatched with fire out to a large mva on a cross over. He rolled up and once everything was sorted out approached the captain on one of the apparatus that was standing there with his crew and said; you need to move these darn fire trucks or I'm arresting all of you! They all laughed, glad my kid brother has jokes....
