Certified / Cashier's / Bank Checks
Certified / Cashier's / Bank Checks
Now I know I might be preaching to the choir, but there might be some of you guys that don't know the latest scam about "bank" checks.
If you are selling ANYTHING, and someone (whom you don't know) brings you a cashier's check, certified check, bank, check, ect., you will need to call their bank to verify the check is real. Simply give the bank the serial number (of the check) and they should give you the amount and the persons name.
If they show up after banking hours DON"T DO IT! If they are coming to pick it up over the weekend fine, they are to call you with the serial number of the check so you can verify it during banking hours. Have their personal banker or teller call you. They can't get a check without the bank being open, so don't fall for the excuse that the bank was closed.
Don't give them the title and the vehicle, or what ever it is. These checks can be printed out on any computer in a couple of mins.
I would hate to see my DTR friends get ripped off.
Begle1 & madhat are exempt.

Geico is now going to get off his soapbox and go back on his lizard warming rock.

I sell something major, I wanna see the cash coming out of the bank tellers drawer. too quick for my truck to make it to mexico with me holding a bunch of $20s with the same serial number.
I have had people try to buy my truck in a walmart parking lot at 10 pm.

I want to point out that simply contacting the bank and asking if the check is good will not protect you from being scammed. The bank may honor the check thinking it is good, and then come to you for the money back in a few weeks.
This happens on a regular basis......

Ok, Now look here...
I'll take all the crap that you can give me about being a Marine, and all the stuff that goes with it. As much as I like Beagle, you ain't gonna group me with him again without a trip to the dentist. Keep playing, lizzard breath, and you'll be a bad taste in a buzzards mouth...

the last one I sold was rather easy and non stressful. We both had accounts at the same bank so when I went to cash the check they were able to check the other guys account right away, verify the funds were there, and remove them instantly. I let them have the truck before taking the check to the bank but thats because in Alaska you wont get very far
, and the written bill of sale agreement included that I'd keep the title and the second key until the check was verified and then I'd send it to them certified mail.

Generally if it is any of the above types of checks, this won't happen as it is guaranteed funds. There are lots of Cashiers checks that are in fact fraudulent though. This does happen with personal checks though. It's called check kiting. Write a check, take the money out, etc. etc. And if it is a personal check, and you call the drawee bank, they shouldn't be letting you know whether or not a check is good.

easy enough to sell them something and transfer the title at their bank.... you can go to the teller with them and have the teller print the bank check to you and then you are sure the check is good..... works well and have done that several time.
People are finding out the hard way that this is no longer true. Banks are honoring certified checks only to learn they are fraudulent a week to 10 days later and then demand the money back.
This is the point of the thread. People are making their own checks on computers and they are fraudulant. They are taking advantage of your you thinking they are good funds, exploiting the fact that you have been "conditioned" by the banks to think these checks are good. All I'm saying is times have changed.
Trying to rip off an 80 year old man. Nice.
