Can you/I get movies off a DVR
like the title says.....Can I somehow get movies off my DVR and on to a DVD disc to play later on any dvd player. i have done a little bit of searching on line, but nothin a dump ol truckdriver understands
dish or Direct?
the Dish is running on LINUX, and menus on TV are just a GUI.
here's what i gathered when GOOGLING a few months ago:
you should be able to have a guy in the states record 100 hours of movies,
in full DVD quality with Dolby Digital, and pull that Hard drive out,
and send it to you,
and you build a spare Linux computer, and put that DVR drive as a slave, and copy all the movies off, or on to DVD's
if a guy in the states had HBO & cinemax, you can do 100 hours quick.
i always delete my & completely refill it on the "free preview" weekends.
the Dish also has a USB hook up, and the guy said with a Linux box, you might could do something thru there.
FWIW, you could just have people buy you VHS off Craigslist or yardsales.
my mom says she gets VHS for $1 at yardsales, give her something to do.
if she sent you some cookies with the VHS, it would be a GOOD life!!

Yes, you can get your movies off of your dvr. You can either buy a stand alone DVD recorder and hook it up to the outputs on your dvr or you can do like I do. I have a TV card in my laptop that I can hook to my dvr and record the shows off of it directly into my laptop. I then can burn them to a dvd using the DVD burner in my laptop. My only complaint about this is I still can not find a way to record HDTV with my laptop in true HD. I can record only in 480p. It's not bad but it's not HD either.

I also do it from my dish DVR but it is slow because it doesnt copy the files, it copies the outgoing analog signal in real playing time. Also, dont buy a Sony RDR-VX511. They have so much copyright filtering that it wont record many programs even though it is legal for home recording.
According to my son in law (in Seattle), The fastest way is to pull the drive out of the DVR and put it in your computer to copy the files but you have to jump through some major hoops because of the encoding. I have not done it yet because it voids your DVR warranty.----. If you google "dish DVR hack" (or similar) you will get a lot of information but have your anti-virus on high. Some of those sites make Nortons light up like an Xmass tree.

I think you need a laptop that is capable of HDTV/DVD. Like the new sony.

The only way I can hook up right now is with standard RCA and S video. I need (want) to find a card like I have but with Component HD connections. So far I have been unsuccessful.
Right now I have 3 Dish Network HD receivers. One of them is a HD DVR (VIP 622 DVR). My original goal was to hook my laptop into one of my non-DVR receivers and use it as an external DVR. So far that hasn't worked except for recording in standard definition.
Dish also offers a way to hook up an external hard drive to the HD DVR to have extra storage for your shows. I thought that would be a great way to record the shows that I have stored on my DVR but they apparently encode the file so the only way that you can watch the shows is through the DVR. I'm sure that someone has created some software that will allow you to watch and record the shows that you have stored on the external hard drive but it is probably illegal.

One of the sane sites on this topic is http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/dishrip/ If you google "dvr remove hard drive copy" and hunt around, you can get into some very interesting territory. Even though I have a spare old computer I am afraid of trying some of the stuff they talk about. Its supposodly legal if its for your own use but Nortons blocked some of the decoding programs I found.
I go to this site whenever I have questions about copying videos etc.It is a great resource.I cannot imagine having any questions that will not be answered there.Ron G

recording the data via the DVR a/v outputs is useless, unless you can record the Dolby digital stream, and capture the Video in at least S-VHS or something.
dolby digital is half the enjoyment of a movie.
