bunny boots or sorels
I am a big fan of bunny boots, but I lost my pair when I moved to iowa. now i am headed back to AK to cover the iditarod and need some proper winter boots again. problem is, they dont exsist in iowa (at least the arctic ones don't). I dont want to buy off of ebay because I need to try them on first. I know I can get them when I get back to anchorage, but I hate not having everything ready to go before I start my trip. anyone have sorel boots rated to -100? are they decent? I dont like all the felt, if they get wet, it seems like they would stay wet for a while. I found some at sportsmans warehouse, but I would hate to shell out $100 for something that wont be as good as the bunny boots.
any input appreciated.

yeah, oddly enough there is only one in des moines, but they only carry the black ones, which are meant for use in temps ranging from 14 to 60, and nothing below -20. if I remember correctly.
I am really looking for the white ones which is what I have always had. but if I cant find them I might need to pick up some sorels.
EDIT-
just found a store 30 miles from here that carries them....for $120
, well, they are the best, I guess I gotta pay for em.

I never thought it would be so hard to get a pair. when I lived in ak you could get them anytime of the year, and buy 18 pairs in your size. I just checked out the place near me that said they had them, but apparently they didnt know what they were talking about. oh well. the search continues.
Have you considered Firefighter's turnout boots?
I got a pair from one of my buddys.
I ran the snowblower for 3 hours last year and my toes never got the least bit cold.
In my combat boots, my toes would usually be numb within a 1/2 hour or so.

i havent thought about those. do you think they would do ok in -50? I'm so hesitant to try something new because once I get on the trail, I'm stuck with what I got. like I said though, if all else fails, I can always pick some up when I get there I guess. I have a little over a month to get it sorted out though. so no rush.

After looking them up, and seeing the PRICE...........WOW!!!!
I think I need to buy my buddy a case of his favorite refreshment.
If you can find them 2nd hand, it still might be worth picking up a pair.

I use sorels up here all the time and love them. The bunny boots don't breathe well for me. As for the ratings, I have them in 2 different weights. One pair is good to around -25 or -30* and the others are good to well past -55*. Also, I don't worry about getting them wet, the shells are waterproof. Just don't go over the top of them.

man, you guys are having some weird weather up there. I hear the chinook is in full effect right now. and from the looks of it (weather.com says north pole is 50* right now!) it is.
if it keeps up, I might just be able to bring some flip flops on the trail.
I've been through cold weather school tried both the bunny boots and sorels (actually Baffins) rated to -100. Only -40 or so, but I found that the Bunny boots worked better for me. Moisture is an issue with them, needed to make sure to dry everything out at night before sleeping. The dead airspace in the bunny boots was the key, they looked stupid, but the bunny boots were the way to go. Extended periods in the Baffins and my feet started to get cold. Not frostbite cold, just felt like like I had to move my toes around.
