Bumper test
Tested my front bumper on some black ice today.
Hit an obstacle with about 5 mph with the left corner of my bumper. Now it is a sad mess and the light points way down.

How easy is it to get repair parts over there?
Yeah, kind of tough to run down to your local dealer I would guess...-Steve

Re:Bumper test
Yep, dealers....
Great news is that if they don't have an official price for part the insurance will "estimate based on the average value of parts of the same function on vehicles of other makes" how much they will pay for my bumper...
Anybody got a price on the front chrome bumper?
(I know that shipping would kill me, just to get a ballpark figure)

Re:Bumper test
How about replacing the original front bumper with a aftermarket bull bar (Aussie term here). May want to check with local outfitters for heavy duty trucks.

You may want to consider a front end replacement from the bumper on down. The price is comparable, and in a lot of cases far less, if you go that route, and there are some pretty good looking ones on the market. I went that route after I hit a deer going 60 in South Texas - I was amazed at the bumper construction - more like a beer can. A five year old could lift the bumper! When searching for them on the web, there are a lot of them out there. I also remember a thread on this site about them.

See my ouchie!
I do contemplate an aftermarket bumper but first of all the insurance will only pay out 1/3rd of the damage if I want cash, and the suppliers here in Austria are at least somewhat .....(Insert profanity of your choice)
Also I'd have to get a type rating for the other bumper to prove that it doesn't endanger pedestrians ??? :P
I'd also like to not to have to pay for transatlantic shipment of a DOR bumper.
Local outfitters could build me a bumper too- same problems as stated above.
Thanks!

I don’t understand you have dealers but dealer does not have parts?
or is it that the dealer will charge for shipping the parts from the US.
These are free dealers. They will order the part for you and will charge you for all it costs them to get the part and then something for them to live from.
I don't have a problem with them having to make a living, but eg 1950€ (US$2400) for a resonator to tailpipe exhaust for my truck (aluminized) is something else. Also getting the wrong lugnuts (VIN, pic of vehicle, sample were supplied) 4 times and them wanting to get that stuff paid....
Since the trucks aren't officially imported (yet) DC isn't interested in supplying parts or services. I'd have to ship my truck to the US or Canada for flashes, TSBs or recalls.
I am my own warranty station

Re:Bumper test
How is any bumper pedestrian safe?
You might get the existing OEM replaced and then try to sell it (if there is a market for it) and have one built. Once the insurance company is satisfied you can do what ever you want.

Re:Bumper test
I would have to prove that the new bumper design does not increase the probability of injuries in a crash.
I don't think that we've got a market for that stuff over here. (Used bumpers)

Re:Bumper test
Over here most of the aftermarket bumpers are designed to push the animal underneath the vehicle during impact, not over and into the windshield. I know in Europe there are stiff requirements on human/vehicle impact safety.
You can see a pic of a HD bumper on my Dad's truck in the members photos section, page 30.

You may already go down this road and I don't know how international shipping works for private parties but if it would be helpful just give me a holler when you need a part I could pick it up for you here and send it to you. Have a Cummins Distributor here in town and a dozen Dodge Dealers. Anyway if that would be helpful let me know when the need arises.
