Yea this is realy crazy, I've driven over that bridge a couple of times. Im watching it on Fox now also, still showing live footage.
Almost makes you not want to wear a seatbelt if you fall in the water. Scary.

Two bridge collapses in a week. The other one was a new bridge still under construction in California.
Kinda freaky.

I just read a story online that said that the death toll was lowered to 4. Is that possible? Over 50 cars in the river and only 4 deaths? I wouldn't think that they have even had the chance to do recoveries from voids yet. Hopefully it's true. That would be amazing.

From what I heard the bridge was under repair and had 16 construction workers on it ( 1 missing) when this happened. There also happened to be a passing train at the time. They suspect that the combined vibrations caused a pulsing wave that shook something loose.

One report I read earlier said that in 2005 it was recommended that the bridge be replaced in the near future due to many bad welds and structural corrosion. Another news item said; "A federal database, showed the 40-year-old bridge had been rated as “structurally deficient” in 2005 and possibly in need of replacement". Also, apparently that type of design is no longer used as one structural failure will cause the rest to fail. It also has an automatic anti-freeze spray system for when ice forms, so that may have also contributed to hidden corrosion.
