Make it a good Manly name you want mind yelling out loud when you need to get him to respond to you. I have a buddy who named his dog " Baby" he sure looks stupid standing on the front porch hollering for "baby" to come in

I have 4 border collies. Names are REX, TIP, BESS and NELL. All are great working dogs. REX is a broadhead, they are harder to train but once they are trained they just plain blow you away. REXAMILLION is his registered name. He IS worth a million. TIP got her name because the tip of her tail looks like someone dipped it into a white paint can. BESS and NELL are out of REX and TIP. I named them after some of thier ancestors. Notice the one syllable names - they do best with those. There are some great books on training. Many talk about the history of the dogs, and have some great stories about living with them. I trained mine as pups - started them around 12-14 weeks with basic commands. They are smart, get things the first time - right or wrong - take your time with them, don't push them, you will have a great dog. I bred them for many years, several made it to the top in different classes from puppy on up. Get to know your dog real well first, the dog need to learn you. ALWAYS talk in a low volume, almost whisper, makes them LISTEN and teaches them to pay attention. When they are way out bringing in stock and you are yelling commands from a distance they can hear you like when you are talking to them whispering. I waited until my dogs were about a year old and working good to introduce a whistle into my commanding, after a while I quit talking and went to only whistling, they got it. I do hope you enjoy your dog, they are great companions, working dogs, good with children and other pets. Excellent cat herders.

Oh make sure you have something for it to do at all times as they are a working dog and get bored easily. Before I got a cat for it to "stalk" all day mine started tearing up the couch coushins. But all in all I wouldn't trade mine for anything, great with tennis ***** and frisbees.

Name him Hemerhoid, or however it is spelled.

The vet's secretary/girlfriend-when-his-wife-wasn't-looking had a dog named Hemerhoid; I asked her about the name, and she said it was because he was a pain in the edit.

You're right, for dogs you want something short that they can recognize. I like names like Tye or Cy. But something cooler could be Turbo, etc. But don't take any of those, their mine!

Single sylable names are easier for traning purposes. Thats why my boys name is Ralph. Its cute to hear a dog named Ralph being called, but its still manly. And if you dont think its manly, get near Ralphs truck when hes in it and you will see just how manly Ralph can be!!!!

His full AKC registered name is Tarpley's King Ralph. My last name and then a catchy kinda name for him. Thats how my grandma named all of her show dogs.

Any collie will make a fine, smart pet. Just have to remeber to stay one step ahead of a working dog. If he ever gets the idea he is as smart as you, you can hang it up
