Blew up my $3800.00 JD ZT lawn mower today

Yep that's a fact...it only has 8 hrs on it. Hopped off to open the gate and WHAM BAM... I figured for sure there would be something sticking out of the block but there wasn't. Now the problem is I can't move the ...it probably weighs 600 lbs and there is no neutral on the thing to try to roll it...I thought I might put some cardboard under the rear tires and slide it up to the drive but then the dealer can't pick it up till Monday. So I think I'll just leave it where it sits... I pulled the key no one is going to be able to move it unless they tie it off to something and drag it and then what...I also have two GSDogs that would be raising all kinds of if someone was trying to do that...This is my second JD mower never had a lick of trouble out of the first one...so I figure I'll pull the trigger again and 8 hrs into a new mower all breaks loose...or something anyway...All I can say is there had better not be a single hint of ..."Well just what exactly were you doing to this poor mower when she blew.. coming from Mr.Deere"...

That's a fact...I looked her over pretty good figuring there should be something sticking out some where but there wasn't... the top end of that motor faces away from the operator...but that doesn't always mean much...

I'd still take a Briggs and Scrap Iron over a Kohler any day. I have multiple Kohlers here and none of them are worth their price in scrap. They're not like to old ones of 15 or more years ago. For some reason, Kohler has their product lines mixed up... the parts for their engines and toilets are interchangeable.

If you find the hydro pumps, there should be a bolt sticking out of each one that you can loosen, which will allow the wheels to turn like in neutral, and you can then push or pull it.

Might want to sell it and pop for a Scag or Exmark? I've heard the JD unified hydraulics can be iffy, but I dunno. I don't own a ZTR.

When I was looking into ZTRs, I couldn't believe the number of companies making them. Ferris, Toro, Cub, JD, Scag, Wright, etc etc etc. Seems everyone is making them!

I used to think $3800 was a fortune for a mower. Then I saw the price of a Turf Tiger.

I do maintenance for a living, and that's how we move our Exmarks when we have to. On Hohn's post, a 36" ZT Exmark will run you about twice as much as you paid for that JD, but they are excellent mowers.

Sorry to hear that, I'd leave it sitting until the guy from Deere could get it.

Briggs has become bad in recent years, however not all are immune. My parents bought a brand new pressure washer last year with a Honda OHC engine on it. We ran it the evening it was bought and everything was fine. The very next day my Mom was finishing up pressure washing, the engine was running fine and all of a sudden loaded up and lugged hard. The time from it running fine to when it stopped was just a few seconds. We checked the oil and it was full of metal, the engine had probably only been ran a few hours.

Or a Cub Cadet Tank Series. Over 500 hours without a single hickup. The 30 hp Kawasaki has been perfect.

That is unfortunate, but defects are made every day in the manufacturing world. sometimes you get a pieces of equipment that has enough of the tolerances off in just the right direction, too big or too small, but still within spec, and it's too much for the design to handle.
The real sign of quality is how long that model lasts for lots of owners. If it doesn't have a design problem, like Kubota ZTR's did, with a hydraulic tank improperly positioned, which allowed the hyd. pump to run dry periodically and burnt up the pumps, then you're OK.

Any update on yours?

Chris

Makes me wonder where Deere parts are being made nowadays.

I was kinda suprised to hear some that dont like the Briggs motor, as I have always had great luck with them in recent years. One mower I would never buy again is a Cub Cadet. It was made soooo cheaply, never again. It had a Briggs motor in it and never had a lick of trouble with the motor.

To each their own

Yeah Us Oldsters are still in the know what's good.

There was a day when Kohler was OK.
