best radar detector
best radar detector
I need a radar detector strictly so I can know where Mr. Officer is and be prepared to give him a polite wave "hello". Has anyone got a good recommendation? Wouldn't the area inbetween the map lights in the roof console be a good spot for a "custom" one?

I've had mine for just over 8 years and it is the best, unfortunatley the best comes with a steep price. About $400 but well worth it.

Another vote for the V1. The only people I've seen suggest other detectors have been folks who haven't had a V1.
The arrows and counters are a life saver. More than once I've gone by a cop only to find that he wasn't the one taking radar. Arrow still pointed forward, I didn't go faster. Guy behind me did. He got a ticket.
Another benefit of the V1 is that they have an upgrade program, they are constantly making improvements and you can send it in to get the latest/greatest for a modest fee.

Cordless bad. I had a Solo awhile back. What Mike Valentine says on his page is true. To make the batteries last they just turn it on/off really fast with more time off than on.
It's not as reliable IMHO. PLUS you give up the bogey counter and the arrows.
Really, you need/want these features.
It's like gauges on your truck, tells you what's really going on around you. Cop behind? In front? Did you pass a gas station that was setting it off... The extra info is useful.

For those of you that don't know, if you go past and give the occifer a nice wave in Virginia with your detector on, he will come and get up close and personal with you. He will give you some paperwork too.

But I thought "Virginia is for lovers"? That is what the welcome sign and the commercials say? Anyway I well know about Virginias radar laws. The signs are everywhere.
I am just waiting to pay some bills before I get one. Does the small area of dots on the windsheild in front of the rear view mirror afeect it? Can I get power from the OHC and mount it right there?

While I don't know everything about detectors, it is wise to get one with the stealth feature. This feature shields the IF circuit.
When a detector receives a signal and beeps, the IF circuit, if not sheilded, will be picked up by the guns receiver and he knows that you have a detector. Paper work follows because they believe that if you have one it is only because you are a habitual speeder. Was told that by a trooper.
