Beer Not Fattening?.....
Lifted from BeerBlog:
A BBC article provides evidence that beer is, in fact, not as fattening as we have been lead to believe -- that it is less fattening than wine and far less fattening than spirits. It claims the beer bellies that abound in the world's pubs are not a result of the beer, but of the beer-drinking lifestyle, which includes a lot of greasy pub food and a lack of physical activity.
Here's a "calories per 100 ml" table they include in the article:
Beer (4.6% alc): 41 calories
Wine (12% alc): 77 calories
Spirits: 250 calories
Milk: 64 calories
Orange juice: 42 calories
Apple juice: 47 calories
By that measure, beer is even less fattening than apple juice.
However, one must consider two things: first, not many people spend three or four nights a week sitting around a bar knocking back two or three litres of apple juice. Secondly, much of the information in the article comes from the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), so it is not unbiased.
However, it is an eye-opening read for the moderate drinker. If your sweetie throws a fit over your one or two "medicinal" beers per evening, you can show her the article and smile -- as long as you stay away from the cheese burgers and fries while doing so.
Drink up boys!

I almost fell out my chair. I was stationed in Germany for two years. I got used to good beer. When I got stationed at Pope afterwards I decided I needed to lose that "beer weight". I bought a 12 pack of Ultra. I thought I was drinking club soda. I still have a hard time with "light" beer. I got used to though. I'm currently doing the World Beer Tour at Old Chicago just to keep the taste buds satisfied.

I hate light beer. I do not like to drink anything lighter than bud.
I want to go to one of those bars that have the 100's of different beers. I'd probably need to take a few days of leave...

Anyone ever tried Genesee Cream Ale? Smooth I think - kind of like a cheap Coors, at least before they opened up the brewery in Baltimore. Baltimore Harbor water just doesn't taste the same as the water in CO.
And for the teetotaling types Vernor's Ginger Ale
OK, anyone old enough to have tried Schaeffer, Piels, Reingold, and Ballantine besides me? Beer today is much better than it was then I think.

Here's a link to a great article in the Wall Street Journal back in August 13, 2002. Just wonder where those 70,000 female nurses are

Lets see, the hotel Im in has 9 different brews on tap
The green gate two blocks down has has three or four different Ales on tap (from what the hotel has)
The Castle restaurant across the road has probably a dozen on tap.
Its not hard to find a 100 different brews on tap here.
Now, when I get home it Bud, Bud light, or miller.

Now I have to rename my beer gut from, "beer gut", to "tortilla chip and chilli and cheese dip gut".

Here is the dip recipe for you fellow beer enthusiasts.
1- Glass pie plate
- Spread 1/4 inch cream cheese on the bottom of pie plate.
- Poor 1 can of the chili of you choice over the cream cheese and spread evenly.
- Add some fresh chopped garlic
- Add some scallions
- Cover with an entire bag of mixed shredded taco cheese.
- Microwave on high for appx 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
I made the mistake of bringing one of these to the station for the superbowl when we were working, now I have to bring 6-8 of them, (DEE DEE DEE).
Enjoy, Tim
