Has anyone ever joined the military and came out with a job as a firefighter? My brother is in the Army and gets out in 7 months.(served 3 years, 1 over seas). and he is going to go to the Academy when he is done. To become a State Trooper in Texas. I always thought that you needed college to get hired.

a lot of the larger departments that do their own training will waive the college hours for military time. i know houston does and i think austin and san antonio do as well.

My state is a civil service state, so you must do a state civil service entry exam, (for the city departments), that is the only way being a vet helps. Being a vet myself and claiming veterans preference on the exam put me at #1 on the hiring list for my city.

Personally, I didn't care to continue firefighting even though as a Damage Controlman, that was one of my main military jobs. Shipboard & flightline firefighting is a different monster than structure/auto fires. I have known guys that worked for me who got out and went straight to work at their hometown stations (VFD's and paid). I assume their training made quite a difference in the hiring process but can't say that I know this for absolute fact.

Have had a couple of my guys who went into law enforcement (one of them in Australia ) so their service time in this type of occupational field does carry considerable weight in lieu of college.

Thanks for the input. I am just going to try to stick it out in college. I know that it will pay for itself later on down the road.
