Batt'n Down the Hatches! It's Crab Season!
I did watch the first episode last night. The pace on the boats seemed more relaxed, but that could be a result of editing too. No captain under the old system would have even considered riding out a storm in a sheltered area.
The new system has a set quota per boat. I believe the season is three weeks long to catch your quota now. They said last night that the fleet is down from 250 boats to 89 boats this time around.

yeah, but a storm coming with 50-60 knot wind. Can you imagine what the sea will look like with that? Besides, they had already dropped their pods and had no reason to sit and wait the storm out. Why not take the scenic and safe route?
What happened to the Cornelia marie? (right name??) The one that blew the head gasket. it did not show the storm at full force did it, i guess that is for next week.

We'll find out what happens in the storm next week. I watched the new one last night. If anybody happened to notice, they did a little commentary on the camera people in an older episode that was played here at like 12am. Each boat had 2 camera people, with 26 cameras. After the season, they were lucky if half of those cameras made it though. BUT, they did not mention anything about the cameramen on the boats that sank.
Greatest quote of of there last night, to me anyhow: "Life my suck, but the alternative is unacceptable." This came from the guy who nearly passed away last year fishing, all of his shipmates did, he fought off the sleepiness caused by hypothermia and survived. He also talked about how he could hear the screams of the other shipmates as they were dying, he said it was something you dont want to hear. He also talked about how every fiber in his body wanted to shut down, and he didnt want to. Definitely a touching story that man told.
