Barn Painting

Hey everyone, I just purchased a house so its a pretty exciting time. I've only got 2 acres but its got a decent sized barn on the property (shown Below). As you can see it needs a nice face lift. The structral supports are still strong, but the roof needs a tad bit of work. A few face boards and a nice coat of paint are in order. So my question is, what brand of barn/fence paint has anyone used with good results? Any good tips other than the obvious clean and prep the wood? I probably plan on going with the barn red color paint. Also would you recommend either brush/rolling it on, or renting a good sprayer and spraying it on?
Thanks to everyone in advance for the help!
Eric

I'd roll it with a good exterior latex. Elastomeric if you don't care about the price.

roller or airless sprayer. I use stain on mine. (never peels) But since yours had paint already that's out.

A good pressure wash is the best way to start. It will remove cob webs, dirt, chipped paint, and everything else that will prohibit the paint from adhering to the wood siding. If there are a lot of stains you may need to prime first with a stain locking primer Kelly Moore has the best i have ever used it's called 255. At lease that's what we always called it. It's printed on the label so i can't be too far off what the store may call it. Elastomeric is a great option. When you pull the lid it looks like pudding its so thick! If it was me i would spray it on thick and back roll it in to fill all the little and big cracks in the wood. When you back roll use a broom handle and attach it to the roller. You'll have 10 times more leverage to press the roller onto the siding and force paint into the cracks. Because you really want a water proof finish where moisture is not getting behind the paint.

I'm looking at the picture a second time and if that's mildew on the siding you'll want to treat that at the same time you pressure wash. Any paint store will have products for that.

Checkmate- yea Milford is about 15 minutes from kings island. In fact I work there as a medic during the season.

Chainzaw- thanks for the tips. Yea I thought I should pressure wash it and scrape/wire brush off all the old paint. I was up in the air about priming but I think I will probably go ahead and do it depending on how much money I'm looking to spend. If I prime, maybe I will get away with one coat. I will check out that 255 stuff.
Thanks!

If you prime you'll only need one coat of finish.

Be warned, that siding looks like it will soak up a lot of paint.......pressure washing is a good idea.

thanks for the tips everyone. I have a few months to get this barn ready before i get to painting, for the warm weather. I think anything will make it look better than it does now. Eventually I'll build a couple stalls and build new barn doors and other things. It will keep me busy.
Thanks again!
