It is hard to tell because i dont know what vehicle you have but most often bad sensors are diagnosed by obd or obdII. They are not trained to test the individual sensor, only to hook up to the vehicle and diagnose it by computer logs and sensor inputs and symptoms. As for your parts man, sounds like an awesome guy...glad you found him, but you can't realistically expect a company to hand you parts for no money and trust you to bring em back.

you said the dealer just swaps part till they figure out what is wrong, but isn't that what you did in the end?

HAHAHA...and try to get them to add a spell checker to the forum....lol. Don't take us seriously though just messing with ya. True that he did do what the dealer said they would do, but the dealer would not have only charged labor but they would charge for every part they replaced...bad or not. Plus not to mention outrageous markup. However, that dealership is severely messed up, they do not work that way, well to an extent. They use all available info to make an educated guess at the problem if they cannot identify the exact reason. Also, you have to remember that just because a tech works at a dealership does not mean they are professionals. They are "professionals".

Hey man I wasn't bashing your parts man, he really does sound like a great guy, I'm just saying that you can't expect a company to do business in the manner he does.
