considering taking a job, 6-8 month term, in Austin, Texas. "I heard" that Austin is like a "grundge" type town. Sorry, the best way I can describe it. What can i look forward to living in this environment? I heard the area is beautiful and its pretty reasonable to live there. Well, as compared to N.Y. that is.

Feedback please.

Well my GF lives in Austin, like any other town it has its ups and downs. Crime rate is up. There are some serious WEIRDOS there, but that is there mott, keep Austin Weird. The loop 360 is very beautiful and the area towards Dripping Springs is gorgeous (west austin). It is a fun town though, plenty to do, you can look forward to some good food, good music if you're into the underground music, and countless events that are Austin specific. If you stay towards North Austin and West it is a pretty trouble free area. My GF lives off of Riverside which is a pretty gruesome area, but that's college apts for ya. This is all mostly opinion, if I move up there to live with her I would get a place North or West of Austin where it is more suburb and upper class.

I appreciate the feedback. I just had to confirm what I "thought" was the scene there. If things go well with job, I'll strongly consider. Other place on table is N.C. We'll see.

We have been in the Austin area for over 35 years now. We both work in Austin but live SW of Austin between Buda and Driftwood. There is a lot to do in this area. We lived on Lake Travis for 16 years and that is a very nice area especially during the Summer. I think you would like the area once you spent a little time here.

All true info....I'm up at the lake all the time. Overall, just about anything west of I-35 is good. So much to do in/around the Austin area. Right now in Tx the weather is hard to beat....very nice!

I moved to San Antonio, Texas from New England.... 20 yrs ago.
You can live on about 1/2 what it takes in N.E. (1/4 if your talking NYC.)

Austin is a college town.... but a big college. Can be as roudy & red neck as you want it....or as quiet as you want. depending on where you live.

The San Antonio...Austin... DFW corridor is the best place to move to from outside the state, IMO. A bit more civilized for a yankee to get use to. Still expect major cultural shock.

I love it and would never go back.
