Anyone from Kansas City?

It looks like my family & I will be moving to the KC area sometime in Feb. I was wondering what are the pro's & con's about living in KS or MO? Is finding a house with some acreage hard? Any input will be GREATLY appreciated!!

Wife and I moved to KC 5 years ago for a new job offer I got. We love it and couldn't be happier with our choice. We previously lived in Memphis, TN which is where I grew up. We were both unsure if it was the right thing to do but looking back I'm glad we did.

PM me and I'll try to answer questions that way. Not comfortable posting much info in an open forum.

Live where you work, i.e. if you work in MO, live in MO. Cross-state taxes are a pain in the neck. Small acreage shouldn't be too hard to find, prices will depend a bit on how long a commute you want.

Welcome to MO of KS.

Where will you be working? Like said before I think it's best to live where you work. I'm in Raymore on the SE end of KC, MO. I lived in MN for 16 years now here for the past 5, Wyoming & Idaho also earlier in the 80's. I like it better than MN, but I'm ready to move farther south for warmer temps although it's not bad here at all. We just had about 8" of snow less than 2 weeks ago and it's gone already, and there calling for a big warm up for Christmas.

There are plenty of acreage places available, of course the closer in you get to the city the more cost involved. I know of a 5 acre place with a nice 3 bedroom 2 bath house with a 24x30(est.) shop and they were asking around $190K. The big difference I found when moving here from MN was they way they build houses is like my grandfather did in the 30's and 40's. they don't believe in trusses, like floor trusses and roof trusses, instead they use old fashioned rafters and joists. Hopefully they'll catch up soon, also, no vinyl siding, mostly wood siding. I prefer vinyl or some sort of no maintenance siding, but that's just me.

Let me know if I can be of any help or you need some directions, be glad to help you out in whatever way I can.

Eric

Missouri has a Local Chapter headed up by President Jeremy Bond.
However, Missouri is a fairly large state. Im sure Jeremy would welcome another DTR Chapter in his nieghborhood.
Always room for more!

I'm aboutr 50 minutes west of KCK, and would be happy to help with teh 'move-in " party!!!! Le tme know what time , and I'll be there an hour later....

KS and Mo are both pretty good places to live. there are a lot of realy nice smaller communitys close to KC on both sides of the border, and there's a lot of good fishin and hunting around these parts.
Land with acreage costs if you want to be real close to KC itself. Last Aug when we were shopping for a new place, I saw a 2000sqft house on 5 acres about 20 minutes from KC that they were asking $250k for. We bought 17 acres with a 1800sqft house for $160K. Just depends on how close to the city..
Jim, you voluntering to organize it? I'd love to see a chapter around here!!!
I'd thought about this, but dont have the time to make the commitment organizing one would require.....

I know two or three people who work there in the IT department. They all seem to like it pretty well.

Sure, I'd organize it. Since we Missourians never really pay much attention to what those "Easterners" over there in St. Louis are doing (except when they're meddling in our civic affairs), I never even knew there was a MO chapter.

It would pain me to call it the KS DTR, but I guess if SWMBO--a Mizzou grad--can work at KU Med, I can live with it.
