Anyone have a hanging gas garage heater?
What kind do you have, and is it loud, effecient. I need one for a 1000sqft 3 stall garage.
They make alot of these..Reznor, modine, hamilton, ceyenne, becon-morris......they all look the same, I wonder if there is a difference. 80 effeciency.
Thanks for any info. Also i plan on getting a 60,000....I have 9ft ceilings, walls and ceiling insulated, doors also are insulated.
Thanks for any help.

I have this kind

It's a mr heater 25,000 btu that heats my 3 car garage with plenty to spare. Now my garage is 30x20 ish so only 600 sq ft but it's quiet, gravity fed heat and never runs out of fuel, plugged into the main house gas line.

Good luck.

I wish I was as fine, as those who work the pipeline!

I actually used an old down draft furnace. Not sure what the efficiency or BTU's were, but it was rated for a 1400 square foot house. I built a filter for the intake, and a couple of ducts to direct the heat in different directions and ducted it out the roof. I got mine at a 'yard' sale for a plumbing company. I think I paid about $300.00 bucks, That was a while back. Sure do miss that shop!!
I have a "Nesbitt" in my cellar. It is natural gas and I am using a line voltage thermostat to control it.It is an overhead space heater but I hung it from my floor joists and it works just fine.I can be toasty at my workbench and in the summer it has a switch to bypass the burner and lets me run the fan to stay cool. The added advantage is that whatever heat I generate down there helps heat the first floor so my furnace runs less so the heat is not wasted.Ron G
I have a Reznor.I have the same set up as you,as far as insulation goes.I heat about 1500 S.F. with 10' ceilings. It is a larger unit,I think 180000 btu.I picked it up used for $300.It has electronic ignition.( no standing pilot light).Depending on how often you use it,will ultimeatly deciede your cost of operation. At 55 degrees, I think mine costs about $15 to run for about 8 hrs. It heats the garage very fast. (20 degrees, rise) in about 20 min., than it runs about 10 min. every 1.5 hrs.. My garage seems to never get below 27 degrees, even on the coldest days.It seems to be at around 40 most of the time, with no heat at all.I also have 2) 16' and 1) 8' overhead doors, which is were most of my heat escapes. They are insulated as well.I only open one at any given time and close it fast.I also know there are codes for these things,if you care to follow them. They may be different in Ill.than Wis. ( I.E Distance from floor to bottom of heater)I hope this helps.any other questions just ask. Oh its not very loud.
I have not used any of this type of heater. I use a similar device that uses forced hot water zone from my house to heat my 2 car garage.
Would something like this be better handled from using 3 seperate smaller units that can then be controlled seperately? Might balance the heat better and not make a single unit work hard to heat the entire area? It also may lower running cost as you could only have a single unit on if you are not using the entire space?

The infra-red radient heaters are the best for efficiency & heat, they heat the objects in the room, making working in the garage very comfortable, relatively cheap, installed them in alot of factories, makes my 2 car garage, 12 ceiling toasty in 15 minutes.

I have a 45,000BTU Mr. Heater Big Max. My garage is 26X28X10 high. It works well, not too noisy. I have a couple of 60" ceiling fans which help even out the heat. You'd be better off with a 75,000BTU unit on a 1000 sq.ft. garage though.
The radient tube heaters are nice. If you go the route, be careful where you place it. It'll heat up your head pretty good with 9' ceiling if it's above your workbench.

I had a modine in Alaska, in Illinois I am running ther Reznors. All have been 45000 BTUs and I heat for the entire winter. Both models are fairly quiet, but since I have alot of square footage to heat in Illinois, I have to run (2) 45000 BTU Reznors. Attached 4 car garage, one is a drive in, the other a side load, both are connected by walkway. Dimensions for one garage is 22 x 24 with 10 foot cielings, other is a 23 x 29 with 10 foot cielings (each side of the garage has a heater). The Reznors seem to do a good job, two years now without any issues.
