Wondering if anyone one here is a FFL around the Housto area?

 

just pick your preffered gun shop. only a $25 or $30 transfer fee...

 

I know that. I wanted to see how much of a pain it was to get your own FFL.

 

oh. Its been discussed a couple times at shotgun world.
you get a background check.
you get to open your house and business anytime to the feds
you have to do some buying/selling/transfering (dont remember if there is a volume requirement)
seems like there are a few other hoops to jump thru.

 

Not that hard as long as your record is clean and you pay the necessary fees, then you MUST maintain the proper records and follow ALL ATF rules.

As mentioned earlier your privacy is at the whim of ATF, they can enter anytime they like and look at your records. I have had my FFl for roughly 17 years and never had an issue with them of any kind. I do however follow the rules to the letter of the law.

 

I am a military man, so I am used to not having my life be 100% private. I have nothing to hide. They can come searching all they want. I just was thinking about getting my own FFL because I plan to do quite a bit of buying in the future.

How often do you have to renew your FFL? Yearly? You use any particular distributor to get your guns from?

 

You renew every 3 yrs and as far as distributors it really depends on what I am buying. Different distributors serve different areas and specialize in different products, so that part varies a great deal.

I think the biggest concern is for you to realize that once you are a Dealer ALL of your weapons transactions are governed by ATF. That means any used weapons you bring in as well. Everything goes on the books and disposition of those firearms also must be according to law.

Another thing to consider is Security, you WILL be held responsible for securing those weapons as well. You must maintain adequate areas for storage (gun safes etc...) Insurance is also a good idea because if someone does manage to steal any of your weapons and it is then used in a crime you could be held responsible financially for the outcome.

If you are just looking to save a few dollars in purchasing your own firearms, I would not recommend a FFL for that purpose.
