Any Termite guru's?
I was replacing a sliding door this weekend and found some active termites Seems the guy who installed this door in 76 needed 1/2" higher threshold to mount the existing door, so he put a small piece of plywood over the treated wood that was there.
This plywood piece not being treated and on ground level was about 25% destroyed by termites and the treated lumber under it was scarred but you could tell they did not want to eat it.
Obviously I put treated lumber back down there but now I am worried that I only found a small part of the colony or colony's. I recently re insulated the crawlspace under the house and NO sign of termites at all. this is the first sign I have seen of them and I live in the woods with food for them everywhere around the home.
My bet is i need to bring in a specialist to tackle this correctly but I am worried about getting ripped off. I had a guy try to tell me years ago that he found them in the crawl space and I needed to sign a contract right away. When i asked him to show me where he clearly did not want to show me.
He assumed I would not crawl down there and look and I made him do so and there was NOTHING where he said there was. Needless to say he left in a big hurry.
Any suggestions on what I should or shouldn't do?

Huh? No Im a welder....
Ive only seen you post pics of a sawmill with a really small garage!
Therefore I must conclude you are a lumberjack....
Now Im gonna stop before Lary get mad cause we high-jacked his thread with the usual high-jinks.
Sorry Top,
Really not to sure what to do with the termite situation other than call a professional. Not sure how well a home treatment with something like malathion would work.

Not to high jack the tread ..but you could buy them plastic termite stakes with treated cardboard in side them that you drive in the ground. workers take them home and it kills the colony (so they say)
I was down in mexico a few years back and found chloradain in a big ol bottle and brought it back home it will kill them suckas for ever and ever and ever and so on

I asked a buddy whom is an exterminator. He stated that they start at ground level and work their way up. Any wood that has ground contact is subject to invasion and is a suspected point of entry. If you have no wood/ground contact then look for mud tubes going from the ground up the foundation to a section of wood. Termites hate concrete and will not crawl across it, hence the mud tube. He also stated that over the counter homeowner chemicals are to regulated to be a proper fix. If you have an infestation you should use a professional.
I have a log cabin, so my buddy comes twice a year and does the whole house inside and out.
Good luck with this, I hope you found them in time.

Just insulated the floor under the house and checked every inch of it, no sign of any kind and wood is rock solid. Any untreated wood is at least 10 " off the ground on top of concrete block and most is a lot higher than that.
Thanks for the heads up

My BIL had a all brick house that was nearly destroyed by termites.
They came in on a steel beam supporting the floor above the basement.
There were terrible to rid.
A 10% solution of kerosene with the chemical finally did it.
Off topic, everytime I see a story on termites, I think of my old Lab. " Spout". She hated them. She could walk into any house and find them (if there are any) in just 3 minutes!!!!!!! I should of gone on TV with her and made some extra money.
