Any fabricators want to build a guniea pig project for me?

I can't find anything available commercially, so I need to fabricate one. It should be pretty simple. Three pieces:

Part 1:

Part 2.

Part 3.

I'm thinking that all you would need to do is weld the shotgun barrel to the hot side of the turbo, remove the turbo compressor, and then somehow connect the axle from the turbo to the crankshaft on the engine.

Anybody interested in the noble undertaking?

might be better with a semi automatic or full auto shotgun, not sure you can load shells fast enough.

You'd only need one... In theory...

Take the one shell and let 'er have it right in the ol' spark hole - that'll keep her screamin' long enough for you to wet yourself

Disclaimer: folks - don't try this at home! (Take it to your buddies house - the law already knows where HE lives...)

You could just do that with gasoline, but that isn't anywhere as elegant of a solution. I have blown a few aluminum engine blocks up with gasoline straight to the chamber before, too, so not something that I'd want to do consistently...

So when you start the Briggs, it spins the cold side axle which spins the hot side which blows air down the shotgun barrel? Why?!? Are you building an air compressor?

Wouldn't be trying to build your own double barrel Coffman starter are you?

http://www.sjvls.org/bens/bf010cs.htm

Think it would work better if you used a M-79 40 mm grenade launcher; the barrel is about the same size as the turbo.

If I am remembering correctly the ones I have seen were about the size of a 40-mm cartridge

Ill bet your neighbors would soil themselves everytime you fired it up.

You got it exactly opposite. You fire the shotgun cell, the pressure turns the turbine, which then turns over the engine. A Coffman starter, as Jim Lane has informed us.

What I really want the system to start is an old Knucklehead motor, so 12 gauge should be more than adequate. The 40 mm shells were used on V-12 Allisons, so I figure a V-twin shouldn't take something that big.

But couldn't you imagine the looks you would get when you get on your bike, pull a 40-mm shell out of the saddlebag and as you look around all of the people are starting to run.
It would look like a scene from Terminator.
You load it into the breech and fire it.. POW you hear the starter gearbox whine a puff of smoke and your engine starts.
How cool would that be?
Until you restarted your bike at a sobriety checkpoint.

Well, that's a noteable fringe benefit... Mainly it means that you don't have to kickstart a super-high-comp Knucklehead with a 60 year old ignition system. And it would be lighter than the alternative, which is a starter and battery.

In theory it would only be used when the engine is cold. We need to find a way to keep the kick starter on the tranny, too, for the sobriety stops. (But first I want to see it on a lawnmower, because Briggs connecting rods are $6.00 a piece and Harley rods...Aren't...)
