Any East Texas Snake Species Experts?
i saw a snake out on the job near elkhart, texas today and had no idea what it was...
a little under a foot long. diamond shape head. redish with black spots down its back. it would rare up like a cobra and its head would flatten like on as well. kinda scared me, excpet it was movin at all cuz it was so cold. we moved it from where we working( climbin trees cuttin limbs) and went about our business. later in the day i went to pick up my soda i had sat on the ground and it was right by my cup!!!! not sure if it was a second one or not, it looked bigger...so we got to playin with it and i couldnt see any fangs in its mouth...maybe they were in the very back. i have a pic on my phone i will try to post, but its not very good

Me and my buddy were clearing brush behind his house in Aledo, just west of Ft.Worth, and came across a snake that resembled that same thing, atleast the raring up and flattening out head. IIRC he was marked like a bull snake with a little reddish tint to him. I used to have a pic of it, but too many phones ago.

Couldn't tell you what it was, but if that happened to me I'd be scraping dead snake off my boots and changin' my shorts.
I hate snakes.
I can't reallly tell by the description... but I an only think of one snake that will flatten it's head out like a cobra, and thats a western hog nose. It's nose is sorta flat and flared up for burrowing, they are relatively short and I believe rear fanged with a slight venom... they eat toads...
IF it was a western hog nose, they are quite fun to play with, they will initially flare their head and act like a cobra, then if that doesn't scare away whatever is there, they will then roll over and play dead, at that point you can do just about anything you want with them.

ive got a new friend hiding around my garage,i tried to catch him but so far no luck.the first time i saw himunder my workbench sqeezing a mouse.it was so long i thought it was 2 snakes but as it got away i saw that the head and front half of body was black and the back half was a brown mix like a rattler,it was probably about 4 foot long.any ideas what it is?
Dont know, but I killed a 5' copperhead in our shop last month, and a 6' one the summer before. If it has no legs, it dies in my theory. Except for my 'buddy' snake. It was a huge, 6' or better, king snake (rattlesnake look alike with no poison or rattle). Used to greet me when Id feed every day and just hang around, never bothered me, and I never him.

I usually kill one every night up at my place in conroe and if they get over 20 inches I consider them big... Although there are some copy cat snakes that look like copperheads.
