Interesting. No one ever told me you had to use distilled water in the radiator. I can't count the times in my life that I've filled up a radiator with a water hose. Never on THIS truck, but on many in the past.

On a related topic, how often should the radiator be drained and flushed? My truck has 82,000 miles on it and still has the original coolant in it.

Yes it is, the big difference is RO does not deionize the water.

Attention DTR Parents! Don't let your kids move out of the house until they know how to light a pilot light.

.......and Oh yea! Make sure you tell them where the garbage goes after you put it down a garbage disposal. I had a tenant ask me if she needed to empty it.

Now I'm off my soap box.
Boy does my experience in plumbing make not only working on my truck easier, it makes me realize, wow, there really are people out there who dont know how to light a water heater or furnace. Not baggin on anyone who doesnt, but really, have these people ever lit a BBQ without electronic ignition?

My personel rule of thumb is 100k, But I check my coolant dca/ph levels every other oil change. I only have 12k on my 06 so it needs nothing yet.

The class 8 and class 6 trucks I maintain at my part time job get a complete coolant drain (engine block also) every 250k, dca and ph levels checked every 3rd oil change and conditioners added as needed.

These are the same people that cant read the jug of antifreeze to learn how to mix the stuff. This brings up another intresting question. Do you really want these people trying to figure out how to light a pilot light in one of your rentals?

You guys are killing me! Ever buy bottled water?? Boneless skinless chicken? Precut meat?? Ground beef? Canned soup? Paint in a spray can? I could go on and on. All are much more convenient but also more expensive. Sure you could make all of them your self but for a liitle more money someone else does it. So let me buy my premixed anti-freeze.
Oh yea I can both light a pilot AND mix anti-freeze (if I want to ).
Don't take this too seriously!

Can't say I want them to have an accident lighting the pilot light, but hey, maybe they shouldn't be in the gene pool.

Another tip I want to pass along. You can also check how well the coolant is resisting becoming a pathway for galvanic reaction (electrolysis, another little thing that can corrode the inside of your engine real good over time).

On a COLD engine, pop off the radiator cap. Take a digital voltmeter or a multimeter and set it to read DC volts. Hold the red (positive) lead in the coolant but do not touch the sides of the radiator, you want the probe tip to be fully immersed in coolant. Then take the black (negative) and put it on your negative battery terminal (either battery). Now check your meter. If you are reading anything more that a tenth (0.10 V) volts DC, then your galvanic reaction has started, and the coolant should be replaced very soon. My truck has 94,000 miles on it and I drained, flushed and filled the cooling system, about a 1000 miles ago. I suspect that I had the original coolant in my truck. When I checked it with the meter I had a little over 0.30 V . Not good, so I drained, flushed, and filled. And now the meter reads well below 0.10 (I can't remember what it read).

I filled my engine up with FleetGuard ES Compleat. Good stuff, and it is even dyed blue instead of nuclear green.

Unless you frequently check the condition of your coolant, ( dca,ph levels), you are headed for major cooling system problems. For the individuals that like to do thier own maintenance and cooling system servicing it would behoove you to use pre mixed coolant. I would think that an extra $20.00 to service my cooling system with premixed coolant is far less expensive than replacing waterpumps or dealing with an overheating engine because of plugged coolant passages. I can't tell you how many cylinder liners I have pulled that are all pitted out and leaking because of poor coolant condition.
When my 06 is due for a cooling service it will be getting premixed coolant.
This is why I put 60/40 pre-mix in mine. It is good for 600K or something like that.

Good point! But I don't want to get up at 0300 hours to lite a pilot light for them. The $35 fee is good, but not at 3:00AM!
