another dog thread. need info

well, i think i'm finally gonna get another dog. its been a while since my old dog passed away and i think im finally ready for another one. Im thinking about adopting a greyhound. From everything i've read, they're pretty calm, good indoor dogs, loyal, crate trianed, etc. I dont have a large backyard and you cant let them out anywhere unless theres a fence or a leash, but according to the rescue center, as long as you walk em everyday they're happy.

does anyone have any direct (or second hand) knowledge of greyhounds they can pass on to me? i've never had a pet that i didnt keep but the wife is a little more hard nosed, so i wanna know what im getting into.

When hubby started looking for a dog, he was thinking of getting a greyhound - but in our climate, they would have to be indoor dogs most of the time, and our house is SMALL.... he ended up with a rat terrier, she's just super, perfect little dog. Big enough to be rugged and small enough to not take up too much bed!

I hear the greyhounds suffer a lot outdoors in harsh winter weather - no hair to speak of, long bodies with no mass to hold heat. They are desert-bred sight hunters, and show it still. Great dispositions, kind and gentle, not a protection dog. Can't say much from personal experience, but that's what I "hear".

I know people will argue, but I've owned one Greyhound and never again. That dog was so afraid of people it took her a year before she'd eat out of my hand.

Can I recommend an English Mastiff. If your looking for a big dog that is highly intelligent and gentle and loves people I would recommend one of these gentle giants. I cant say enough about mine...

we have a Japanese Akita that is AWESOME. she is a WATCH dog first and foremost. her job is to protect my wife and her territory.

buddy had a greyhound, they are "motion/sight motivated"

so when somethings moves fast, they move FASTER....

so, uh, yeah, cat's don't last long - they get tired of being tackled.
never hurt them, just scared him & family when he would run after the cats.

our new pup is a Bull Mastiff, he's "food motivated" when means, he EATS.

so far, his personality is great, playful, freindly, but protective
he is learning from the Akita to be a good watch dog.

we are doing the $100 puppy obedience class at PetSmart, the wife is taking the Bull Mastiff pup, and it really makes him more enjoyable, because he WILL listen to my wife.

let her take the dog to training if you do a pup, and it will bond them together.

I've never owned one but all the reading that I've done about different breeds and my experience being around many different breeds working in rescue for a couple of years it sounds like you've got pretty accurate information about them.

My sister has a greyhoud and I wish she would let me have that dog. It is a older dog and very very smart my sister and her husband are both deaf and the dog knows all its commards in sign language (sit, stay, lay down ect)

The dog will sit on the couch next to you and sits like a human would sit on a couch lol. They have 4 young childern and the dog loves them and is protective but not extremely protective. Before he got to know me everytime I came in the door he would growl and bark but thats about it.

greyhounds are great. You can let them outside without even being with them. All they will do is run circles around your house

But I would have to agree with cincydiesel on the Mastiff. I have had them now for about 20 yrs and would never go without. Great dogs!

We have four dogs, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, Black Lab and two White Boxers.

The Ridgeback is an amazing dog, the "Pro Athlete" of dogs, big fast, agile, strong and great security. But if you live in a cold area, forget it. They do not like the cold.

Black Lab, all around great dog, 12 years old and going strong.

The Boxers, perfect! The saying "once you've had a Boxer, you will always have one" is true. Not to big, not to small. Can be intimidating, love to play, loyal guardians.

Truth, I love them all, they are our "kids".

Wink greyhound is a good choice and a heck of a rescue..

central NY here, cold and snow, friends have two greyhounds, they do the rescue foster care as well. not too skittish, walk on sidewalks in the village, stay around the house too but loud noises will cause them to look for their owners or get back inside. some will run out of habit.

little back jacket for heat for colder climates, they love to walk or play and be petted but will not slobber you or demand attention. very obedient and just love to be with you. patient with kids and handicapped individuals.

eat less than a beagle, will go to the bathroom where you train them to.

healthy animals , average life span is ten years. not prone to hip dysplasia.

hope that helps you... I am in to artic dogs, last one this year. miss em but OH the memories, LOL

My sister and brother inlaw own about fifty acres of pasture. My brother-in-law came home early the other day and caught two guys with greyhounds on his land. They told him they come out about once a week and let the greyhounds chase rabbits. They were about 1 mile off from where they had permission. BTW I just got me a pit bull.
