Thing is, the guy voluntarily joined the service. If, after he had joined, he decided to become a Conscientious Objector, he still could have continued to serve his country and finished his enlistment. The military does (or did when I was in) have contingencies for CO’s if the CO was willing to work the system. One of the best medics I ever knew was a CO and there were a lot of CO’s that worked other MOS’s that didn’t involve carrying weapons or “committing war crimes” (that part cracks me up) .
LOL…..Dang, you got me started on that one.

60 minutes had a piece on the subject Sunday night. They're backing off a bunch now. I don't know about when this guy deserted. Seems like in a voluntary army, you should honor your contract or go the co route.

I find there is a distinction between a fellow who is being forced to join the army against his will (a draft) and someone who willingly joined and who (presumably) knew going in he may be placed in harm's way while doing the bidding of his commander in chief.
Out of the two, I find it far more palatable to harbour a draft dodger than a deserter.
Presumably knew he might be placed in harm's way? The days of getting blind drunk and waking up in the Army are long over. It takes days, even weeks in some cases, to join up. Just like that deserter that wound up in San Francisco in the first months of the War, noone's going to believe that you didn't know you might be called on to actually PARTICIPATE in a military conflict. Military service is the logical result of joining the military. That SF deserter said he joined for the benefits, but didn't think fighting in this War agreed with his beliefs. Tough. Spend the rest of your hitch in Leavenworth.
No matter how distasteful you may find the War we're currently involved in, there is no justification for deserting your post.
Thank you Canada! We need more countries like you; most places, like France and Mexico, give refuge to those fleeing prosecution here in the US. I hope I speak for the rest of us Americans when I extend the offer to return any fleeing Canadian criminals we catch down here. I'll PM you if I find any.

They should spend the rest of their tour, or even longer, locked up. I also believe they should pay restitution for some if not all of the benefits that taxpayers spent on them.
I was always happy to see a waste of human flesh like this go......The last thing I wanted sitting on my flank was trash like him. I think 6 years with a sledge hammer making little ones out of big ones is just about right
hippy pukes like this disgust me. being an iraqi freedom veteren myself, i think they should lock this disgrace to an american up and throw away the key. he signed up for the benifits and didn't think that he would actually be placed in danger? this sickens me. as far as i'm concerned this punk along w/ all other deserters are traitors to this county. you know what, on second thought, this lowlife ought to be lock up and once his sentence is served, he should be exiled from this country.

In George Washingtons time he would have gotten an appointment with the firing squad.

I 100% agree, being from "up here", he would have wasted a ton of money petitioning and appealing decisions and I get to pay for it (YEA 5.44 a gallon diesel and 10% sales tax, was 14!!). He signed a contract to serve and protect for X amount of years for X amount of pay. He reneged on his part and should have to pay it ALL back with interest.
