Just breaking, 8.0 in the Aleutians, Tsunami alerts along the coast.
Looks like it was extremely deep, hopefully will limit some damage.
Praying this will find everyone safe and sound.
You are in our thoughts.

What else is new, we get them all the time out there. Semisopochoi volcano is active and right next to it. Little Sitkan is also right next to it and it is now showing harmonic tremors. It's fishing season. A Tsunami warning means you designate a spotter to watch for it. We have T shirts with a big wave on them with print that says "If You See Me Running You Better Catch Up".

Thanks for the good thoughts patdaly.
Dang, I didn't notice it. I have a dance routine especially choreographed for earthquakes.

Hate to even say this, I have just had a strange brooding about a big one hitting Alaska, I have exactly zero facts, but just can't shake the conviction........

Very few people live out there (no bridges) and the few that do are so use to it they think nothing about it. We're due for a good one in the South central part. The likely suspect is the Castle Mountain fault that is North of Anchorage. It runs along the volcanic chain on the West side of the Cook Inlet and follows the Matanuska River in an Easterly arch. The USGS speculates if it lets go it will be around the intensity of the 64 quake, but in a more populated area. The only good point is a little to no chance of a tsunami happening.
On a side note, when you are looking at EQ's of the depth this one had there is a good chance it is associated with a magma chamber.

Yeah, I sometimes worry about it too. Our house is primarily mason block construction which is not the best material for earthquakes.
Last time I checked, in earthquake prone areas, earthquake insurance on a $200,000 dollar house
was $2500 a year and that doesn't cover anything but 80% of the structure.
It doesn't cover any contents.

take a page from rich Californians,

besides safety first; set the house on fire. coverage is 130% on what you lost, what you suffered, what new construction is needed.
scary stuff anyways....eek. no premonitions Pat Daly
walking through the damage in anchorage makes one feel very vunerable.

Had us a bit concerned when we heard it. We were in Denali and you get near nothing of any news there. Had a phone call from the states to tell us, and the first report was the south end of Alaska was being evacuated. That was really assuring since we are heading south right now and will be a few miles north of the Anchorage area tomorrow. Finally got better reports of it all here in Talkeetna tonight, so we head on in. Sure gorgeous drive today from Denali down - - that is some drop dead gorgeous country including the cute bears out chasing the cars on the highway.
