alcoholics

When you have alot of Irish in you and both of your grandfathers died of complications from excessive alcohol intake it makes you think about what you are doing.
When I found out many years ago that between my genes and my metabolism and my size, at that time, that I could drink most people under the table and not feel the effects I realized that the combination was not conducive to being successful in life.
My parents both came from alcohol-broken homes so they never drank - they let me and my brothers know it would not be tolerated but let us learn for ourselves the lesson that only experience can teach. When it became apparent to me that it was very expensive to catch and keep a buzz on any kind of regular basis I decided that I would spend my money and brain cells a little more wisely.
My sincere wish is that those of you who have fallen off the wagon for whatever reason find the intestinal fortitude to claw, scratch, and fight your way back ontot the wagon.
AMEN BROTHER.

Like G.I Joe once said "Knowing is half the Battle", nothing to be ashamed of Killfast. NO-ONES perfect, (Carmen Electra & Jessica Simpson excluded ofcourse).
Refomed drunks and other addicts can be the coolest people to be around. Drunks and dopers that haven't hit bottom are usually some of the worst people to deal with in life. I've spent many a' Saturday in bed till 3 or 4 in the afternoon because of what I got into the night (and morning) before. Done with that, after my son got old enough to start repeating what I say and wanting to be with me and do what I do. Pre-Teens don't miss much, so one way to have them loose respect for you is to act like a Jackass.

I have not had a drink yet today and have been doing that for 18+ years(2/18/87) but the last few years prior to that I was doing a quart of Dewars everyday..........AA likely saved my life and although I no longer go to meetings it is very important that all should know that help is available, there are others with the same problems we had and it does not have to be that way, life can be good again.
When drinking and drugging ceases to be fun we need to take a look at ourselves.
AA is free and you do not have to say a word.......just go and listen. Ron G

Didn't use to drink very much or often, haven't had a single sip in two years, one thing I learned when younger is that hangovers suck! Everybody has their own way of escaping, I like to play video games, the plus side being it improves your hand/eye coordination. I also like to read fantasy novels, you can get totally wrapped up in a good book.
After the typical college partying experience, my liver wanted to come out and see the environment for itself. Since then (~10 years), I only get polluted once or twice a year (I call it a release) and rarely touch anything in between. I never thought I had a problem of any sort and still don't think I did. It was just the thing to do in college, but in growing up you could say, the hangovers and money spent started to not seem worth it. Learned that on my own.
20 yrs sober for me with AA and as some of you can relate to, its not been a complete bed of roses.
A guy at one of my first aa meetings once said; "A drunk has no conscience and an alcoholic does."
I was having a real hard time with my conscience and my health and I was only 22.
I put on a lot of miles in the drinking world in a very fast time. Liver damage, law problems. a family riddled with it since who knows when, friends in the same boat..and for the longest time I never thought that there was anything wrong with it and I also found I had no clue about growing up or responsibilites. I faked it in my drinking and I faked it til I made it in my sobriety.
Life sucks when you don't know who you are.
Cunning, baffling, powerful and patient is another thing I heard from an old timer.
He also said that when we are in our meetings, our addiction is waiting right outside doing push ups. How true.

Wanna see something scary? A&E runs a show called "Intervention", it covers all type of addictions and how they effect the family and the addict themselves. Some of the stuff actually makes me feel sick to my stomach. Sad how a substance can take hold of the human body and mind. Glad to hear the guys with AA stories, I was an "Alateen" participant at about age 11.

21, had 6 beers, 5 shots of Taaka, 3 of everclear, and 7 of some rather smooth mexican tehkillya tonight.
I've tried to quit, but being newly single, 21, and enjoying a good time, it's impossible to _not_ drink down here. Most of you have the surroundings to allow you to have a goodtime sober, down here there's not much to do other than drink, as I'm sure TxDiesel007 will pipe in and say. Well, drink or have any drug you could possibly want at 1/10th the cost of up north, that has it's advantages too

Been alchohol, drug and tobaco free for about 20 yrs but there are times when I would like to have a drink( or something else). My problem is I wouldn't be able to have just one, then the drinking would lead to other things for me. For me its better this way and I'm also trying to set an example for the kids. I remember when my dad drunk off his *** was acusing me of being high on weed. Guess we both had problems.
Some people can handle the moderation thing and some cannot, some of us liked it too much and had to walk away from it completely.

My dad was a very abusive drunk who never admitted to being an alchoholic. When I was 11, I chased him out of the house with a shotgun one night when he was beating Mom (again).
That being said, I found myself falling into the "let's have a cold one" early in my military career. Then I realized that after that first cold one I was having 10 -12 more, then the harder stuff. After I found myself in a strange town one morning in Korea, with no idea of where I was or how to get back to where I needed to be, I started slowing down.
Final straw for me was working an accident as a deputy sheriff in Miss. Found a friend involved with a drunk driver. Drunk was basically jelly and friend was not far from it.
That was in 1991 and since then, probably have not drank over 20 bucks worth of anything.

was gonna have "a beer" last night, but realized I was WAY too excited about it after a few months off, so I decided to go a little longer...
I may have to have a couple brews with dinner at the cabin this summer though...
