Air Rifles

Hi all. I'm looking to buy an air rifle to defend my garden from varmints from my back porch or bedroom window!

I don't want to use a "real gun" and be booming away in the back yard scaring livestock not to mention the people who live in the other house in the same farm yard.

Wondering what to look for and what the most cost effective sollution to give me the accuracy and power to take out crows etc.

Besides sounds like fun..................

Any experience with air rifles???

Sugestions?

Be careful, my bb's and pellets automatically change their direction and head for the nearest car window

If all you're worried about is the noise, I'd get a .22 and shott .22 shorts through it. If you can't do that, I've had pretty decent luck with Crossman air rifles.

I have a Gamo 1000 which shoots .177 pellets and it is probably the best you can get in a cheaper air rifle. Velocity is 1000 fps. Walmart has it for about $130.00. It will drive a pellet through a small animal.

Take a look at Beeman if you are serious about adult air rifles. I have the R-9 deluxe with a scope, in the 5mm cal. 800 fps. Kills varmints out to 50 yards. Deadly accuate, one pump, no seals to go out.

If that is out of the price range look at Crossman or Benjamin. Easy to work on, and pack a good punch too.

I used a sherridan 5mm air rifle for a while, man that thisng could shoot, real accurate. as for the 22 rounds, go with the cbee's, real quiet, some air riffles are louder. I usually stick to the bow for discrete shots, chipmunks at 20 yards are real good practice.

Sheridan blue and silver streak. I have had one for 40 years, and it still works as good as the day I got it. 6 quick pumps, deadly accurate, powerful. I smile every time I use it.

If noise is the only concern and you already have a .22, there are several choices to solve that. CCI makes the CB Long that is a low velocity short range round. Out of my bolt-action .22, it makes about as much noise as the firing pin falling. If your .22 is a semi-auto, keep in mind that it most likely won't cycle the action for you. Aguila also makes several powderless rounds that might work for you. If your .22 has a scope, you can always try the old shoot-through-the-bottom-of-a-soda-bottle silencer as well. Good luck in the war against those rodents.

I have a RSW .177 pellet rifle. Had it for 20 years, adult sized and very accurate. Plenty of power for varmits. Also rat traps work good on birds
that ravage your garden, pumpkin seeds make good bait, so I hear

But I also hear you have to get rid of the ones in the trap fast or they act as decoys, other birds see them on the ground and think he's eating something.

The sheridan Blue streak is great, so are the RWS series of air rifles. I've got one of each, but honestly if you're trying to kill stuff and be quiet accurate and lethal, a good scoped .22 rifle with either sub-sonic hollow points (both remington and ely make em) or the CB longs are awesome. Very little noise, a whole lot quieter than those pellet rifles, and accurate. Just be careful where you're shooting, but I'd go with that for sure. I keep one near the door of my shed just for that purpose. I've killed all kinds of varmints with subsonics and the CB longs, including ground hogs, crows, blackbirds, squirrels, stray cats, a couple foxes, etc. Give them a try.

Ok this i can do

I have em all from RWS diana, to Benjamin Sheridan, and even some high dollar GAMO air rifles.. For the value in my opinion you cannot beat the good ol benjamin sheridan, for less than 120 bucks you can have 800 feet per second, and the queitest all around of the three groups. It is also very accurate and is my perfered one for "newcastle disease" control at the horsepens and "paint protection corps" at the house... The benjamin sheridan is great all around, its compact, quiet, and very accurate, the only downside to it (well to some) is the fact that it has to be pumped eight times, for me its ok due to the forearm workout, and i love the bolt action that it has..

I also have the Gamo Shadow pellet rifle, for 1000 fps velocity it is downright vicious for pigeons, jackrabbits, and small game BUT it louder than a 22 in my opinion, and i have had the neighbors call the police on me and have had it confiscated already once. If you put a good 4x scope on this gun, as mine does, its one heck of a nice cotton tail plinker, and because it actually has some recoil, (not much tho) it can be a nice pre gun for a youngster, before a 22 rifle or so.

Finally the RWS diana, i have one that was handed down to me, again, accurrate as can be 900 fps on the velocity, and really good rifle, just a little on the loud side. I perfer it for more of a showy gun per say cause it is a really nice wooden finish.

Best prices on airrifles can be found at www.cheaperthandirt.com, its where i have bought at least one .22 benjamin... I had forgotten to mention, all of my above rifles are .177 caliber, i dont seem to be too fond of the .22 cause they dont shoot off very far without dropping, although if u can get it to hit right MAN they do pack a wallop. I also have a benjamin sheridan .20 caliber blue streak. THIS ONE by far is the most accurate one of the three that I have, except i cant find ammo for it locally, so i keep it just under the bed at home...

My bro also has a beeman, but its a 550 fps velocity, very accurate gun tho, im workin on gettin a good one soon tho,

Any questions please feel free to ask me, I hope this helps..

Thanks!

Rick

I second the 1,000 FPS guns as being kinda loud. I had to stop using mine in the backyard due to the noise. They will drive that pellet right through 1/2" plywood, sheet metal, or an unfortunate rodent, so you need to be as careful with them as you would a firearm. They are real guns, not like a BB gun that'll just leave a welt.

When our crazy neighbor had a rat problem and they were coming under our fence, we had good success with a .22 CO2 pistol. If it didn't kill 'em, it would at least stun 'em enough that you could walk up on 'em and whack 'em with a shovel.

I've always wondered if that worked.
My .22 doesn't have scope, so I've never tried it.

I have a really old Crossman (I think), pump up BB/.177 pellet gun that I've used to take out a couple gophers over the years.

Have one in the backyard now that refuses to show it's face, so I've resorted to poison bait.

Never heard of it being done with a bottle, but my stepdad said he used to rig up a lawnmower muffler over the barrell of his .22, and it was nearly silent, even with high velocity long rifle cartridges. You clamp it onto the end with a hose clamp, and make sure you have a scope, cause you wont be able to see over the muffler.
