Reminds me of the time I left Conroe, Tx at 8am and arrived in Raton, NM at 6pm. On a motorcycle.....

I definitely wouldn't go for it on I-35 or I-45 because there's just too much traffic.
Ha! I've driven in West Texas quite a bit-- I lived in Midland for a while.

Anyone know of "Telephone Pole Road" out of Odessa to get to Hobbs, NM?

That's the only time I've sustained 100+ speeds for any length of time (about 45 min)

My Maxima normally nets about 27mpg hwy, but on this run it was 17! It was a near-emergency and there are only two stop signs and NO TRAFFIC on an arrow-straight road that runs ~100 miles.

I have no problem with people driving fast when conditions (weather, traffic, driver skill) permit it. But don't you DARE let me hear you complain about expensive gas when you are wasting so much of it.

Yes, we consume more gasoline than any other country. We also have the world's largest GDP. DUH!

That was pretty much the point of this entire post, at least for me. People around this country whine, *****, and moan about the cost of fuel, and then do this.

But hey, if they want to do this, no sweat off my back. Actually, it probably is in the long run, but I am NOT anyone elses conscience.

So, again, sorry if I offended anyones sensibilities....carry on.

75-80 mph in west Texas is OK until you get to El Paso. Trying to slow down to 55 is very difficult. I got me one BIG ticket there.

I absolutely agree. We should stop sending billions of federal aid dollars abroad ever year and start spending that money on mass transit here!

How many of you remember the "double nickel" where the feds dropped the spend limit nationwide to 55? Then everybody and his brother was complaining about the slow speed limits, especially on the interstates.

Yes, we use more petroleum products than other developed nations. But, our nation has the 3rd largest population on the planet and the largest economy. That doesn't mean we should waste it, but it does mean that everything else being equal we WILL use more oil.
