55 Mph
I have done this experiment in my frontier.
Of my 51.2 mile round trip commute, about 40 of that is highway where I can drive 65 to 70.
I made the commute for a month never exceeding 55 mph. I drove the same, I just stopped accelerating at 55 instead of 65.
Comparing those numbers to the three year history on the truck. I saw no change in my numbers. Some of my best fuel mileage is gained actually driving faster than the speed limit.
Fuel mileage is also determined by the tuning of your engine and mine has a flat spot right about 50 to 55 mph.

I say leave it and let the driving consumer decide for themselves.
With the truck I drive the legal speed limits. The Magnum on the other hand all bets are off!

I voted other for the reason as can be seen in this thread. People are going to drive what ever speed they wish, almost reguardless of what the speed limit is. Not saying that we are all speed demons, well some are
. When was the last tiime you saw most of the traffic on the road going the speed limit, other than military bases and such? Most people travel 5 to 10 mph on average, I'm guessing, more than the speed limit that's posted.
This is just my observation of where I have lived and travelled. You all probably have differing out looks. Just my $.02.

My truck gets it's best milage at 60 right around 16-1700 rpm's anything over 2000 rpm's I can almost watch the gauge go down. So 70 is about top speed for me in the truck.
In the wifes car I get better milage at 75 then I do at 70 or 65, so I am thinking it all depends on the vehicle.
Lowering the speed limit will just make more of us criminals

A lot of it ties back to the final drive ratio and where the speed limit ties into the torque curve for your engine. Going from memory, and it is getting old, from my Jeep days, you wanted to be running at 80% of the RPM's where the engine had the highest torque. Abuddy of mine got his best milage going 85 MPH in his 89 Ford van. After a gear change, his best milage was down now to 65 MPH...

55 MPH Senator hints about...
Well it looks like someone has asked the Energy Commission to at least think about this...
