Freedom to decide. I usually drive at 1800 RPM.

Yes but most people aren't smart enough to realize that driving 10mph slower would save them 10 to 15 % on fuel.

Just drive 55 and blow through all the red lights, that will get you there at the same time!

many states are increasing the speed limits on their 55mph roads, as they have found the number of accidents, fatalities, and 'road rage' incidents decline with the higher speed limit.

I have done this experiment in my frontier.
Of my 51.2 mile round trip commute, about 40 of that is highway where I can drive 65 to 70.
I made the commute for a month never exceeding 55 mph. I drove the same, I just stopped accelerating at 55 instead of 65.
Comparing those numbers to the three year history on the truck. I saw no change in my numbers. Some of my best fuel mileage is gained actually driving faster than the speed limit.

Fuel mileage is also determined by the tuning of your engine and mine has a flat spot right about 50 to 55 mph.

Good one Evil Monkey!

I say leave it and let the driving consumer decide for themselves.

With the truck I drive the legal speed limits. The Magnum on the other hand all bets are off!

Leave it as it is, and let people decide for themselves.

I voted other for the reason as can be seen in this thread. People are going to drive what ever speed they wish, almost reguardless of what the speed limit is. Not saying that we are all speed demons, well some are . When was the last tiime you saw most of the traffic on the road going the speed limit, other than military bases and such? Most people travel 5 to 10 mph on average, I'm guessing, more than the speed limit that's posted.

This is just my observation of where I have lived and travelled. You all probably have differing out looks. Just my $.02.

My truck gets it's best milage at 60 right around 16-1700 rpm's anything over 2000 rpm's I can almost watch the gauge go down. So 70 is about top speed for me in the truck.

In the wifes car I get better milage at 75 then I do at 70 or 65, so I am thinking it all depends on the vehicle.

Lowering the speed limit will just make more of us criminals

A lot of it ties back to the final drive ratio and where the speed limit ties into the torque curve for your engine. Going from memory, and it is getting old, from my Jeep days, you wanted to be running at 80% of the RPM's where the engine had the highest torque. Abuddy of mine got his best milage going 85 MPH in his 89 Ford van. After a gear change, his best milage was down now to 65 MPH...

Nissans are notorious for getting very close to the same mileage no matter how you drive it as long as it is stock. On my old 2001 Frontier Quad Cab with supercharger I always got 18 MPG.

That's ok... we shouldn't create laws to protect folks from their own stupidity.
