2001 Jeep, dies, sometimes no start

01 Wrangler TJ, 4.0, runs fine when it runs, will die when driving, sometimes
it will not start at all. It's my buddies father in law's rig, low mileage,
The FIL gave it a squirt of starting fluid once when it wouldn't start and it started and ran for a second until starting fluid was gone.
They can't get reliable information if this thing has a fuel filter in the tank
or just some kind of screen. Any ideas?

Is there a cel. I have a 95 avenger that was doing the same thing and it turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor.

fuel pump is on its way out, next time it dies, go back and give the tank skid plate a couple swift kicks right in the middle, if it starts fine after that, its the pump...

BTW, it does have a sock filter that sits in the tank with the pump, but in 20 years of wrenching on jeeps, I've never seen one plug up.
