12v Battery Diagnosis Questions ???
Jim, I have a Prosine 2000w unit. Love it. It has the digital control panel readout inside the fiver so I can monitor AC input voltage and frequency, how much AC current the inverter is supplying when running, current drain on the batteries when using them, charging voltage and current, it will not activate on reverse polarity AC input - - cool device.
I thought equalizing was desulphating. I can watch the readout, it will monitor the voltage and battery resistance, then apply a higher than normal charge voltage that will go as high as needed up to 17.? volts. Then, as it becomes happy, the voltage starts coming back down. When it tells me it is completed, a readout with the hydrometer has all cells floating equal. It then holds a charge quite a bit longer. I have only done this twice in the 5 years I have had these batteries. Dry camping for a couple weeks at a time is rough on them but they have held up great. Another great thing about charging with the smart charge technology is the charger backs off when the batteries are charged. This prevents overcharging and boiling off the water which occurs when plugged in for several days. This is my third rig with an inverter/charger - - wouldn't be without one.

It works fine but nothing like the Prosine did. People ask why do you need such an expensive inverter but that is the way I do things, I got is for less than $1,000.00.
Equalizing a battery does Desulphate in the process but I have read somewhere about some high-end units that also condition the battery.
There are different methods, some inject the battery with high voltage pulses to break up the sulphation and one unit actually desulphates batteries by putting out a certain frequency that makes the crystalline sulphate go back into solution.

Has your inverter ever shut down from low battery while you were camping? Is your charge line connected from ther truck through your connector?
Be VERY careful when creating sparks near a battery. Especially if it has removable caps and they are off. The hydrogen and oxygen given off from the battery is very explosive. I blew one up once and got acid all over me and ruined the battery.
I always wondered why the guys at the old gas stations were so ugly like their face blew up, the ones who would jab screwdrivers or pound on the battery terminals with a wrench to get it to work, while they had a cigarette hanging out of their mouth.
Back in the 1976 when I worked for the county I was working on a Sunday and one of the utilities there was a low rider with the hydraulics. They would run the 12 volt stolen lift gate pump on 24 volts to make them jump faster, he brought his batteries to the shop and connected then up to the charge rack and turned it on, full on. I smelled the hydrogen sulphide gas and went to investigate and found the batteries were puffed up like a ball sitting on the floor.
I went outside and switched off the emergency then carefully covered the batteries with a trashcan till they cooled.
The battery charger was a motor driven generator and he had it set on high, which was 500 amps.

Shut down? Oh yeh. For those that have not been around the Prosine, you can set the shutdown voltage so while using it on inverter, it will shut off when and if the battery voltage goes too low so you don't hurt the batteries. You can also set the low AC voltage so all electric shuts off and the inverter kicks in if the shore power goes low - - saves burning up some expensive electronics.
I understand the Prosine does spike the equalize cycle periodically as you suggest. Good stuff - - and factory service was outstanding. Mine argued with the Mexically Electrical Company - - didn't understand Spanish - - and blew the logic boards. Took it by the factory just north of Seattle on Thursday afternoon at 3 pm, they called at noon on Friday - - it was ready to be picked up. WOW. Xantrex makes some good products.

100 amps or 200 amps ??
When I was a diesel mechanic for the county we had some coaches that had 4) 8-D batteries on a slide out tray, they were all in parallel. Another mechanic was disconnecting the battery when his 1/2" Craftsmen ratchet wrench hit the positive lug I remember a flash of light and the entire wrench handle lit up white-hot before it melted, it was almost instantaneously.
Locomotive battery banks are also fun to have to work with.
On my fender I have a 1/2 X 9/16 wrench and a pair of Klein High Leverage cable cutters stuck to the fender next to the battery using rare earth magnets so I can cut the cable in an emergency.
To test if the battery is discharging through the top, take a test light and clip the ground to the (-) then with the probe move it across the top of the battery from (-) to the (+) if it is leaking the light will light up the closer you get to the (+) wash it of and it will go away.

Thanks very much.
