Am I the only person who admits he did some wrong things? I shared my experience because everything is not black and white. When the adrenalin returns to normal so does your objectivity. Things always look less gray in the daylight.

Larry, good advise but I think you need to add;
Get an OUTSIDE dog and an underground fence!
Join/create a Community Watch program.
Get the wife and adolescents enrolled in gun safety classes offered by the Sheriff’s dept.
Always, always call your closest neighbor(s) when you call 911. To us rural dwellers, when a neighbor calls, staying inside is not an option. Choose to meet at a designated area and keep the guns holstered until you encounter a perpetrator. There have been other perps since the one I shared and most of them just looking for cans of gasoline. I'll stop now. Nat

natstayl- For legal reasons over here I won't go into the stupidities I committed. This is according to our laws. If I allegedly loaded a gun in the presence of a person with the possible intention to ..etc I'd get in trouble. If I admitted so on a public forum... Not that I'd like these laws, but it's better to obey them.
Let's say that the adrenaline can make you do the most stupid and incoherent things. Training beforehand can help a bit.

Natstayl....I've never done anything wrong.

Just kidding. Luckily, at least when it comes to firearms, I've never been put in a situation where I had to react with my weapon and I therefore have never had to go back and evaluate all of the mistakes I made. Hopefully it will stay that way, but I think we should always be prepared just in case.

On second thought, I mighta shot him just for drinking that stuff, and then used the "He needed killin'" defense.

Intresting tales, just remember this. It is never ok to shoot to protect "property." Only to protect life/limb. Also, it's called "lethal- force" not "wound to hold for the cops". Some states may have old laws on the books saying you can shoot a horse thief, but most have already recognized the difference in "violent felonies". Also, regardless of what a law says, the final say is the jury. The law may give guidence making you think you are within rights, but will the jury think it was unreasonable? If so, that law goes out the window. Also, if you get pro-active and do some filming, just keep yourself safe and minimize any confrontations, he may not want to be filmed more than you want to film him.

Yeah, what Top said. Eloquence is not on my short list of talents. However, training is to get you to decide what to do ahead of time so you don't have to think it through with sombody pointing a gun at your head. If your mind is made up 3 yrs. ago, and you've practiced it a thousand times a year since then, you don't have to think it through in .3 seconds. 2+2 is always 4, and someone points their shootin' iron at you or yours they push up daisies.

So you're saying you go outside to investigate also? I'm not saying it's the right thing for everybody, and never the right thing for some, especially with a loaded gun. I expect I will continue to investigate before I call 911 (or the neighbors). What I find determines whether I do at all. It also depends on whether it's the bark of the dog, or the driveway alarm or a combination of both that awakens us. Certainly if a vehicle ventures up the drive with their lites on, I turn on the floodlites and watch them turn around and leave. When they turn their lites off as they drive in, I leave the floods off and get up and investigate. Usually long enough to record a tag no. more than a confrontation. But I'm prepared either way. I record the tag no. and a vehicle description in case I see them scoping out someone else's place and to give to the sheriff's office in the event someone in the county get's buglarized. Nat

Right or wrong....I'll probably continue to investigate things that go bump in the night as well. I'm certainly not going to just lay in bed and hope it goes away.

I just ordered myself a SureFire flashlight to help out in my little investigations. If nothing else I'll blind someone.

Right you are Dieselminded. The private life is not for everybody but my wife and I like it. I hate having to protect my stuff, but it's MY STUFF, not free for the taking and with so many out of work, theft is on the increase. My gate stays open most of the time.
I don't mind in the least locking the gate and blocking them in when I have uninvited guests.
If it's thieves I call 911 before I lock the gate. I let them pilfer whatever they want while I go back into the house and wait for the deputy. If it's a couple looking for copulation opportunity I ask for Id's and let them leave. Fun stuff blocking the exit. Thieves will drive around a while looking for an escape route, innocent young people drive right the door and ask me to let them leave. Nat
