Hey, I didn't say hard headed. I said very hard headed

Today's HOLY CRAP moment.........
Wifey just called ....totally out of breath.
Seems she went to the pond to feed the fish with the grandbaby on her back(we do this every other day around 7:00), and encountered.....a Black Bear.
She described it as nearly as big as she is.
She ran back to the house, the bear didn't sem to to care.
She said he/she was still standing by the pond.
This is a new one for me.
Any advice?
Other than avoid pizzing the bear off.
I HATE being this far away.

Glad she made the escape. No advice from me, I never seen a bear. I guess, "watch out"...???
I wish I was as fine, as those who work the pipeline!

Yep, turned out ok. Her momma started balling for her (she is in the corrals getting AI'd, calf didn't want to follow so she stayed in the pasture). I turned off the fence and dropped the wires, set in the shade, had a smoke, a couple thousand skeeter bites, and she finally came back in. The next morning she decided it was really best to be in the corrals with momma and walked right over to them and through a one way V gate I set up (calves check in but calves don't check out, not until I open the main gate any way.)
Well at least you have experience to fall back on...
Crap... Missed ya again... Gonna finally step out of the 80's and get an iphone... Gonna need the handcuff key.
Ok, I'll bite... What the heck is a/an belligerent. Present company excluded of course
True, but if they can't prove it you walk... We seem to missing a few wild life recently here too...
But seriously, they are NOT scared of humans any more. The report of a blank will make them think twice, a bean bag will make them stay away (just make sure there is a slug chambered behind it). Black bears are actually fairly non-confrontational. But without hunting, they have no reason to fear you. Also, never run from a bear. It triggers hunting instincts. Make yourself look as big as possible, and quietly walk backwards until you are at a safe distance (1000 yards). IF the bear decides he may want to play a little, wave scream and step forward forcefully. If they still want to play, run, up hill if possible.
Also, if possible, never startle a bear. If you see one in the distance whistle or shout so they see you and know where you are. Most (black) bear attacks occur from a human startling the bear. Then the bear has no choice but to be defensive and attack.

This link is for an article on what not to do. http://www.adn.com/2011/08/31/204153...er-dog-by.html The gal was really lucky she got away with it.
As you probably know, black bears tend to make circuits, returning to the same areas that they previously found goodies. They will even place their feet in exactly the same place every time they use an established trail.
Dont want you to worry but if the bear has found food in an area it will come back. If you have a 12 guage without a choke, you can use a cracker shell or better, a bean bag shell (they cost about 4 bucks apiece but you only need to use one).
In the meanwhile, Ill bet if she makes a lot of noise (bang a few old pans together) when she is going out to the pond, she wont ever see the bear while she is out there.
Morning.
Today is Thursday, September 1st.

It seems (according the the local game warden) that we must learn to coexist with our furry forest friends.....
The usual, keep an eye on the dogs, keep pet food off the porch, keep the trash cans secured, be careful walking around at sunrise or sunset, type stuff.
We have a bumper crop of wild blackberries near the pond, I'll bet that's he/she is hanging around.
I'll wager wifey will be feeding the fish in broad daylight now.
(Maybe she'll let me get that Ruger Blackhawk as a 'Pond buddy' now)

Morning, coffee's pallatable today. Looks like last week of summer. Hot and muggy this weekend then the bottom is suppose to drop out. Been tinkering with the jeep before it gets cold. Got it gutted right now for bedliner paint job inside. Bumpers are almost done finally.

So it wasn't your wife's fault! I'm hurt...
I found the horse dirt but by the time you add in trucking it would be nearly $200 a load. Before I spend that kind of money I need to talk to the customer again and he wouldn't answer his phone. Oh well...
First, don't run from the bear. A little quick reading on bear encounter etiquette might be a good idea, especially if he's still breathing after meeting Mr. Colt.
He wants to get rid of it, not open an Eharmony franchise.
Morning, passing through again.

Miss you raddy blue eyed boy...Howz things?
chaikwa done gone religious on us? too much preachin'.... you finish that wood sign yet?
Bark, glad ya found out it is an easy treatment. going peacefully in his sleep is not what we want to hear....probably more like something to do with your Vegas friends....lol
yeah, black bear stuff is food related. what the above advice is, right on . if ya really do not want bears there, spray cayenne pepper on the black berries or cut them down. if you eat the berries too, then hang up the aluminum pie plates, tin can on a string nailed to a wood stake in the ground, so that it moves and makes noise when it hits the stake. something simple and flashy the bears cannot process and wander elsewhere. we have successfully moved the bear trail South over 100 yards from our house, so that we don't 'find' each other. they used to come hit the bird stuff then on to the blackberries. as Bark said, they follow the same path. changing their path is what we were advised by some Seneca Indians and it worked very well.
rainy day today, fighting with common sense and losing. harley carburetor.
think i have put in a spring with too much tension, have to tear it all apart again and see if the gas actually stays in the carb.......
Mornin' all,
fix and trivia fix done. Sept 1st and still hot. 101°F forecast for today.
For August had 30 days over 100°F and set 6 new heat records. The drought is so bad that it was on the PBS News Hour. How the ranchers are selling of their herds, no feed or water. Horses are also in bad shape. Some are being given way at auctions.
Shovelhead, good advice on the bear. Read on the news the other day that a homeowner shot and killed a bear that was in the back yard with his children. Now the Feds. are charging him with killing an endangered species. Guess the feds thinks bears are more valuable than kids.
Bark, now that they found your problem. Fix it and sleep well.
Shorts. A good friend of mine won the Black Lab national championship in 1981. He raised, trained and showed the dog himself. He still judges and has written a guide on judging the dogs. Smart dogs.
Have a good un and be safe out there.
