Today is Sunday, August 28th.

On this day in 1774 - The first American-born saint was born in New York City. Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton was canonized in 1975. They shot her out of a canon?

1830 - "The Tom Thumb" was demonstrated in Baltimore, MD. It was the first passenger-carrying train of its kind to be built in America.

1907 - "American Messenger Company" was started by two teenagers, Jim Casey and Claude Ryan. The company's name was later changed to "United Parcel Service."

1916 - Italy's declaration of war against Germany took effect during World War I.

1922 - The first radio commercial aired on WEAF in New York City. The Queensboro Realty Company bought 10 minutes of time for $100.

1939 - The first successful flight of a jet-propelled airplane took place. The plane was a German Heinkel He 178.

1963 - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his "I Have a Dream" speech at a civil rights rally in Washington, DC. More than 200,000 people attended.

1981 - John Hinckley, Jr. pled innocent to the charge of attempting to kill U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Hinckley was later acquitted by reason of insanity.

1988 - At an air show in Ramstein, West Germany, an Italian Air Force jet collided with 2 other jets and then plunged into a crowd. 70 people were killed.

1990 - 27 people were killed and 350 injured when a tornado struck in Will County in Chicago.

1996 - A divorce decree was issued for Britain's Charles and Princess Diana. This was the official end to the 15-year marriage. Yeah, I know. "Who cares" right? But it's a slow history day and I needed SOMETHING!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Start each day with a smile and get it over with.

Coffee's on.

Morning Yall

We're still here

As Wanna Be said. . .Windy. Haven't turned on the TV yet, just savoring some Java. We're getting 15 MPH sustained and 25 Gusts right now.

We were out and cleared out the rest of the nursing home last night. The water rose at a remarkable rate. Our staging area had no water in it, but was up to our knees an hour later. We moved 50 people in an hour. Only a few seemed to show any concern. Old people can be tough.

Other than the Rockaway River breaching it's banks, I haven't seen anything else that rattles me. Lots of street flooding, that's all short term.

We're golden here at the moment

Us old people have been through worse. They would have been happier if you through them a BBQ instead.
The weather report lied, it's still raining here.

Iced mocha time. Afternooner all,

Chaikwa, 1907 - "American Messenger Company" was started by two teenagers, Jim Casey and Claude Ryan. The company's name was later changed to "United Parcel Service." If I remember the history, they started in Seattle and used bicycles.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Start each day with a smile, and they will wonder what you are up to now

Shorts, hubby and I laughed at your weather description of 400* and bake there in DFW. Shorts I've asked you a million times not to exagerate
Last time I looked here in Cypress TX it was 104°F. Hot and dry.

Looks like Irene is now a TS. Good news for the right coast. Wannabe prop your feet up and wait for BARK to fax you the homemade pie.

The Glad Grad had the graduation yesterday at the U of H Hilton Hotel. We got there on time. As the opening remarks were being made the fire alarm went off and we all had to leave the building. While we were outside one of her nieces called and ask directions. We could hear the fire sirens on her phone. Told her just follow the fire trucks. It worked, She got there before the ok to go back in. Then the sound system gave up and had to be fixed. Other that is was great. Untill we headed for the reterant in the Woodland where we had reservations for the 15 of us. It was close because of a power outage. Ended up at a Catfish house. All went well.

We, mostly Shirley got the garage cleaned up so we can put the 2 cars in. The Nissan is longer than the PT. While she was doing that I was clearing the back yard of land mines, dog logs, and lawn fudge. Then started watering the brown grass. Hot out there.

Sure is quiet around here. I'll take the Dragon out for a walk.

Have a good un, Be safe out there. Watch out for falling limbs, down power lines, and other hazards in the storms wake.

Yeah. . .That's why I held up last night without panic. So we got wet. So what. The team, in their 30's and 20's, were all nervous and screwin up in the din of the storm. Had to pep talk them and told to stop worrying about all the dangers. "get the job done so we can get out of here"

Nope, had to hold off traveling. Father in-law needs one more small surgery. He should be ok to leave in a couple of weeks than we will be on the road again.

Im glad it turned out as well as it did for you E-coasters. Already hearing people second guessing saying the weather service over reacted. They are morons. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks Woof

You know how that works. If you're not prepared, the worst will happen.

There are some areas that did get what was predicted. I was west of here for several hours winching and chaining trees out of my friends driveway. He'll have power in a week or so. He was totally unprepared.
