LED taillights version 2.0

A bit of a variation on the other style of making the taillights visible from the side and adding more to the rear.

Used 16- LW-R-12VDC from superbrightleds.com
1/4 drill bit
drill
sharpie
tape measure

Drilled the holes 5/8" from each edge on both sides

Man, now I am going to have to get new taillight housings again! Those look better than the round LEDs I got at Napa. I'm guessing you used the red? I wonder how the white ones would do.

If I go that route I will probably get another 16 and put them in with the brake lights. Or put a couple with the brake lights and put a couple in the reflector. Those could probably be used with most of the signal lights on the truck to get the faster on/off of the LED without adding a bunch of lights.

I would have to put them on a weatherproof connector and smear some silicone on the back side of them to keep the dust out of the housing.

Where did you get your housings? The ones I got from napa I had to trim the holes to get my light sockets in.

Yup.... They do look better than mine.. and I agree that the stop lights need to be done as well. The parking lights tend to "overwhelm my brake lights" at times, but being visible was the name of the game for me.....

and this should be added to the sticky ....

Thanks guys, yes I did use red LED's. From what I've read you use led's to match your lense colour. Something about they only emit the one colour not a full spectrum like a traditional bulb.

You definately could add more with the brake light, I'm using high-power 4w LED 1157's and halogen 1156's so I "think" the brake lights should still be over and above the marker/tail lights. Also working on a highmount/3rd brake light for the back of the cab

The way the grommets snap in there with the bulb pressing in there is no risk of dust or dirt entering the housing, the LED's are also waterproof so the rears can take some moisture. Picture below of the wiring at the back, all soldered together, brush on electrical tape and then shrink wrap. All 8 leds per side pull 1.8watts so virtually nothing.

I got the housings from rockauto.com

Quick fix.

Make those LED's the "stop lights" and change the 1157 bulbs to 1156 and call them your runners.

Add a resistor and a diode to the array and also connect them to your Tail-light circuit so they are about 1/2 brightness on Tail-light and full bright on Stop.

Also I did not say this but if you were to add a Blue LED to the center, the Red will appear as Purple, much like the old Blue-Dot lens that I did not say to do.

I've thought about that many times. I would love to see how it looks.

Any of the aftermarket taillights use Cree high power LED's? The square yellow LED's?
