newbie from Canada with lots of questions
Hello fellow diesel owners. I'm new to the CTD and this site is tremendously helpful and downright friendly. There are a ton of questions I have from reding some of the posts.For instance, is there some advantage to removing the silencer ring thingy? Do I need to know what my boost pressure is? Also would it be possible to put in brackets what some of those abbreviations stand for? This site is the best, thanx guys and gals.

A ton of questions? Be prepared for a lot of information! There are a lot of very knowledgeable folks here.
The silencer ring thingie... what it is-- it is a ring that snaps into the intake of your turbo compressor housing to prevent the "turbo whistle". It provides no performance difference one way or another whether it is in or out. It is all about noise.
With a stock truck you don't "need" to know what your boost level is, but can give you an idea of how your truck is performing, relative engine loads, it is fun to watch, and once you learn how to read it, it may help you identify some engine problems that may occur.
We (most folks here on the forum) are always talking about gauges... they are very useful and important in letting you know what is going on with your truck to help keep it happy! You don't mention if you have an auto or manual tranny-- if auto, then you would want tranny temp gauge, egt (exhaust gas temperature) gauge, fuel pressure gauge, boost gauge... the first two are very important, the rest I listed in my order of preference.

thanx guys for the replies. Being new to the world of diesel ownership, I guess it will take time to learn the terminology and DTR seems to be the place to do it. Many interesting threads and lots of helpful info. I plan on retiring next year and towing a 23 ft 5th around Canada and the U.S.A. What I was refering to as far as abbreviations are things like OBD port, OEM, MBRP etc. Anyway, thanx for the info and interesting articles.

Welcome fellow BC,er Im up North, I tow with my 06 and let me tell ya you wont have any trouble pulling a trailer that size, I pull a 25 ft now and the wife is looking at 30, just so we can hit Arizona for the winter, the only thing ive done is add the Quad XZT tow box and a amsoil nano filter, and thats about all im going to do, it tows great.

Here is a breakdown on some of those abbreviations you listed:
1.) OBD Port- "On Board Diagnostics Port"
2.) OEM- Original Equipment Manafacturer- Refers to the original parts from each manafacturer (Dodge, Ford, Chevy) that were put on the truck at the time it was built.
3.) MBRP- Name of a diesel performance exhaust company. They produce 4" and 5" exhaust systems in both aluminum and stainless steel for our trucks.

Thanks John for the clarification on the acronyms ( I think thats what they're called). By the looks of some of your sigs, a guy could go broke pretty fast making all those mods. One step at a time I guess. Maybe see you in Arizona the next cold winter fiftygrit.

You are very welcome Sir! If you ever need any clarification on any of this stuff you see, please feel free to P.M. anytime. If I can't figure it out, we will find somebody here who can. Some of the abbreviations and designations on the new 2008 6.7 Dodge CTD CR are hard to understand, that's for sure. So many emissions parts now and sensors, relays etc.,.......it is tough to keep up with it all!
And your right, you can "go broke pretty fast making all the mods" as I am living proof of that!
