Sorry to hear about your truck and your "man pain". Hope all is well

at this point they are all rebuilds...... make sure the one you get has the electronics module up grade
1688 is "internal fuel injection pump controller failure"
brief description of DTC "internal problem within the injection pump. low power, engine derated,or engine stops"

Read the ditty on injection pumps on bluechipdiesel's site before you opt to buy. Not all rebuilts are truly rebuilt, and you need to make sure you are getting one that is fully refurbished or you run the risk of failure right out of the box.
Once you read that article, take it with you to your local injection pump shop and see if they will work with you to sell you the parts and do the work yourself. If you ride a Harley and keep it tuned, you are certainly skilled enough to install a couple hundred dollars worth of parts and rebuild your own VP44.
If you are having difficulty finding a pump repair facility, drop by your local John Deere or Case-IH dealer and talk to the service manager about who does their pumps.

you've been around long enough to know you cannot rebuild your own pump

I've bought mine from MWFI,it lasted at least 200k,the block cracked on my HO engine,so I put a SO engine in my truck, cause that was what was around.
I'd recommend MWFI,good price,and the one I got lasted a long time.
I've got that one for sale if you wanna roll the dice, but if you want a rebuild MWFI is the place to get it,as far as I'm concerned.

Not entirely true. If it's the eletronics package yes, but otherwise:

He got another 20,000 miles out of it. Not bad for under $50.00
