wierd shifting
ok i have 1999 automatic with 270k, about 5k ago it would keep shifting like crazy when coasting on the highway( not a tranny porb, but something elctrical) it would go in and out of lock up, alot of crazy stuff going on, well i took it to dodge and they had no idea, checked all kinds of wires and sadi it may be fixed by replacing all computers and what not( $2500 ish) but they managed to get it calm and now it onyl does when trying to pass at highway speeds, up steep hills, acceleratign to get on highway, and if i put it to the floor from a complete stop. has anyone ever encountered this problem, im a college student and cannot afford to put in all new computers and ****
Sounds like your torque converter locking and unlocking. Try cleaning all of your battery cables on both ends. The bad end on mine was the ground on the engine block. If that doesn't work, DTT has a noise filter for $35 that should fix the problem.

sorry i forgot to mention i put a noise filter on it, tried putting it in all different places, ive checked every ground possibly seen by the naked eye, yes it is the torque converter going in and out of lock up, but we have no idea what is causing it

most likely you are just getting electrical noise or RFI (radio frequency interference) into you TPS or APPS, caused by the alternator. see on these dodges the two field wires from the aternator run across the engine in the front and into the same wire loom as the TPS or APPS signal wire does. the signal wire is digital so it is highly sensitive to RFI which causes a volt spike and can unlock the converter or kick out of overdrive or both, at completely erratic times. because every time the voltage regulator (in the PCM) shuts off the magnetic field in the rotor collapses and causes a volt spike which the TPS or APPS signal wire picks up. the ECM thinks you just floored it and kicks down. the noise filter is sometimes not enough, or the alterntor is going bad in the near future, check your batterys for AC voltage if you have 1 volt or more it is bad, if you have by chance an automotive digital scope you can watch your ripple pattern. set up as a volt drop on the positive battery cable set the scope to 5ms time scale, 120< hertz 1volt on the top and -1volt on the bottom. one other way to solve this is to either take the field wires out of the TPS or APPS wire loom and run it seperately, or the take the field wires out and rap them with a single wire and then connect it to ground to bleed off any RFI, that is the single best way to permanently solve this issue.

it has new batteries, new tpps( thought it would help) and i believe my dad isolated the wires you are speaking of. i guess i should just try and get rid of her before everything lets loose all at once. guess ill have to get one of the new mega cab duallies ive been seein. oh yeah anyone wantto buy a 99 4x4? not too many problems, just dont put it on the floor on the highway! haha
