What place would you trust to work on your truck?
What place would you trust to work on your truck? (leaking! blah!)
After switching to synthetic (kicking myself once again) the truck is leaking. Its either the t-case or transmission.
I certainly dont have the tools to pull either out (frame spreader, high/heavy jacks, etc), so id prefer to let someone else fix the oily leakage before something grenades.
What place would you take it to if it were yours?

As far as trusting someone, I'd go to a Cummins dealer and see if they'd do it. I come more to trusting those folks like at Southern Plains Cummins in OKC than I would these high school techs next door at the Dodge place. You'll pay a premium, but have piece of mind that who ever touches your truck will have probably worked on over a thousand diesels or is being watched by someone who has. That is what I like about them. I don't know if this applies to trannys, but I'm sure if they can swap a tranny in a Peterbuilt, they can do your truck. $.02
you dont need a jack or frame spreader method to pull the t case. just remove the driveshafts, shift levers, unplug the indicator light, remove 6 bolts and benchpress it out.
if you pull the trans, you dont need an alignment tool, unless you take off the flywheel for some odd reason. if you need one, shoot me your address and i'll mail you one.

Yes, the transmission can leak out of the rear seal. That's an $18 seal and about one hour to replace. Just remember to block the wheels before removing the drive shaft!!!!!!
Wow thanks for all the responses. (located mesa, az)
Tcase to driveshaft seal was replaced same time when i switched to synthetic because it had a leak there and the driveshaft end was wet.
Now I thought It might be leaking again or the seal wasn't a good one, but the bottom of the trans is wet and it was dripping out from all over the skid plate too. Im almost certain its the trans because the tcase has ATF which went in pink and when it leaked onto the driveshaft before the leak drops were pink and now its more of a clear color covering the whole bottom... and now resurfacing the driveway
but i cant rule out that seal since it did leak before replacement.
Is the input shaft on the transmission known to leak? My other old dodge car leaked like a siv' there before.
DrDiesel- I stopped filling when it started to leak out of the fill hole.. i coulda swore thats the right level.
Good to hear theres no removal involved with these for leaks... Cause theres certainly no benchpressing either of those for me, im only a 140lb guy and benchpressing a transfer case 20" into the air while attaching isn't going to happen!
Ill degrease it again tomorrow and give it a closer look without the skid plate and whatnot in the way. Maybe dump a couple small food coloring bottles in each fluid and watch for the rainbow.

4x4, Ill give cummins a call tomorrow and see if its something they can do in a decent time..
dodgezilla, ill look from the seal to the trans to see if its wetter than the rest there. good point.
My reasoning for passing this off to a shop is starting monday the truck will be 20-200 miles a day for work.. Cant afford to take it apart myself and risk something not going back in smoothly or some bolt snapping or a special order part needed from cummins. (you know what im talking about.. it happens!) If its the seal ill try it again or the access covers ill re-rtv them..

Find a good known trans shop and talk with the owner. See what he would charge to diag. and repair it. Then let them fix it. The dealer will charge to much for this type of work. Get references first.
