Turbo Toast?

I think my turbo is ready to bite the dust! Recently, I've been smelling rubber burning (not the tires) and the check engine light has come on. Couldn't find anything melted, but I noticed a tinlging sound like a small bell coming from exhaust. Inspected turbo shaft and I can move it side to side about 1/32" just barely touches blade to side of housing. When goosing throtle the turbo sounds like it has bad bearings, kind of like bad alternator bearings. Inlet of turbo has a little black oil. Air cleaner is stock paper type. Any suggestions?

A little side-to-side play is normal but NOT when the blades will touch the housing. Also check the longitudinal play (forward/backward).

I would not drive it anymore than necessary (read -don't drive it at all) and get it rebuilt. Small parts have been know to go through the compressor and into the cylinders doing some expensive carnage.

Not to mention buying a new aftercooler when it goes!

Thanks for all the responses! Good advice, I'll use my other wheels until this is fixed...sounds too expensive to let it go.

Does the turbo have to come off the exhaust for rebuild or can I just rebuild it in place? I've heard of rebuilding it w/ larger wheels...does that run up the cost a lot? I'd like to keep the economy where it is, but hey, a little more power is always welcome. Where can I get the rebuild kit?

I suppose high EGT would toast the turbo...need to get gauges.

91 rangerturbo - Codes? I've done the 3X on & off, but nothing shows up in the odo. Maybe I'm not doing the on/off thing right. Can you explain it to me? Do I leave the key on after the third time or do I turn it off and wait?

Any ideas on the rubber burning smell? I've noticed intermitant whining from the power steering (and slight steering wheel vibration), but fluid is full and it doesn't smell burnt.

This is my first diesel. Love the power, kind of reminds me of my big block Charger, but w/ lots more torque.

I work odd hours, so I can't read reply's when posted, but I do value what your advise. Keep the ideas coming!

http://www.htturbo.com/ about $75.
You will have to remove the turbo.
The best mods require machining, talk to HTT about it.
