Turbo Problem??

1999 2500 24V, Automatic, All stock. Well maintained.

Well....To make a long story short, Back in May,2005, my Lift pump went bad, I replaced it. A few weeks later i noticed the truck was getting harder and harder to start....it would just NOT start, and i noticed very little power. I was going out of town for a few months, so i took this truck to the dealer. They told me my Injection pump was leaking down internally, I said okay go ahead and fix it. WHEW>>>WOW$$$$$!!!! Okay...so i come back to town pick up the truck...as soon as i pull away.....NO POWER!!! It just does not want to power up, i remember that Turbo would "Whine up" and this truck would move!! But Nothing!!! I CAN Faintly hear my Turbo, I have checked all the clamps and rubber boots they seem good/tight...so... Frustrated i bring the truck back.....I got a call today....Telling me the Turbo is bad???? I always thought....Either a Turbo, works or it doesn't. A weak turbo??

First the Lift Pump.....Then the Injector pump$$$.....Now a turbo??

Please any help...Ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!!, I am getting frustrated...mad as hell...spending ALOT of money on this truck!!!!!

I would pull the truck out of there pronto. Sounds to me like they don't have a diesel tech and just want to throw parts at it until they find the problem (at your expense). Try to find another shop. I wonder if there is a fuel line leaking air? Possible plugged fuel filter? System bled out fully? Turbos don't normally just "go bad" sitting in a shop. Go to the truck and pull the intake off. Grab the shaft and try to wiggle it. It will move some, but if it allows the vanes to touch the side then it is time to rebuild. There should be almost no end to end movement. You can also try looking here for some help too: http://www.dieselpage.com/tips.htm

check these sites too. and like Tom said, be craeful who you take it too. there's probably someone on this forum who can recommend a good mech in your area

also, it could be your turbo, but it also sounds like it could be a fuel delivery problem. if there's not enough fuel to create the exhaust pressure, the turbo won't create pressure either. did you check your pre-filter when you changed your lp? how's your air filter?

Your symptoms sound more like old fuel hoses that are allowing air infiltration than anything else. Change mechanics, and do the simple preventative maintenance things first.

If you hoses are leaking, you will trash the new injection pump and likely damage the new lift pump before you ever find the problem using the monkey football method that your mechanic seems to be trying.

well like said a M. times b4 -you need gauges man. and you would probably know yourself.
But what your describing is not enough fuel......it takes fuel to make your turbo boost and versa visa (well to get pwr)
I would ask the shop about fuel P. or hook a gauge myself

Okay....On Friday I dropped the fuel tank. I cleaned and modified the pick-up screen. I cleaned the tank. I cleaned and Tested the fuel line going to the lift pump,it held a vacuum. I pulled and inspected the lift pump. I installed a new Fuel filter. I also pulled the Intake hose from the turbo...was clean, had NO end play, and very little side to side. I checked all the clamps...all good and tight. So.. I took the truck out for a ride on Sunday....this is wierd......during the 25 miles.....the truck would, run really good and strong!!! Then... it would go back to not having "Power"....this happened on and off for the entire test run. This is wierd!!

I guess i will have to check fuel pressure...possible bad lift pump?
Also....can a bad APPS be causing this??

What should the fuel pressure be? 10 PSI at idle?

David D.

P.S. The charging system is fine and the batteries are less than a month old. I also checked all the electrical connections....just in case.

MAP Sensor.

Make sure it's plugged in, and the electrical connections are clean. If it stil acts up, replace it with an official Cummins part. Don't buy your cummins parts from Dodge. They are marked up 50% over Cummins Retail.
