Truck hesitates when taking off.

I have a 2001 and yesterday when I was getting ready to cross an intersection I was taking off and the truck hesitated. After that anytime I take off it hesitates. After I get going its fine, its the anitial take off that it hesitates and sputters. I dont know much about vehicles or anything, and dont really know how to accurately describe what it is doing. I can not tell if it is the transmission or if it is something else. Any help would be appreciated as we dont trust most mechanics around here because we have been ripped off so many times because of the lack of knowledge that my husband and I both have of a vehicle.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Not knowing anything else about your truck, I'd say:

That is a classic symptom of the lift pump going out.

It is covered under the 100,000 mile engine warranty.

If you don't trust the dealership mechanics, you can buy one yourself and install,
but get it directly from Cummins to make sure it is the latest and greatest,
and much cheaper than from the Dealer.

The lift pump pulls the fuel from the fuel tank, and supplies it to the injection pump.
If the lift pump isn't working properly, it is shortening the life of the injection pump

Lift pump, under $200 bucks.
Injection pump, around $1,300 bucks.

As long as you haven't added any go fast goodies, the injection pump is also covered under the 100K warranty.

Whereabouts in Nevada? maybe there's a member near who could lend a hand?

Thanks! That makes a lot of sence. I am here in Vegas. Maybe some one can recommend a trust worthy dealer around here.

Is there a way to test and see if it is the lift pump, because if I know it is something that is covered I will take it in to the dealer......

Thanks again!

The lift pump can be checked by using a fuel pressure gauge or a volume test. If your '01 has the same filter housing as mine, it's not hard to hook up a FP gauge..

If you have it done, I would suggest you first search the threads here using "lift pump" or "fuel pressure", and know what the reading should be before you take it in.

I just hope it's not your injection pump.

When is the last time you checked your air filter? My truck was running fine and then one day I went to pass another vehicle and it just fell flat on it's face at hard throttle. I ran fine otherwise. Got home and checked the air filter and it was filthy. Changed it and all was well..
