When it down shifted lost all power no throttle response. wouldnt idle up was running very rough prob on only 3 cyl or so. got off the road cel was on checked codes p1693 no others. Ater i shut the truck off it would not start again. have fuel at top of filter housing and a the vp44 lift pump is kinda noisey. not sure what to do now any help please!!!

.it sounds like you lost the IP....a code reader will tell, i bought mine at checker auto parts for $70.00. i think Schucks or kragen is in your area.
look for 1688 or 1689, if you have one or both vp44 is bad... another check you can do is to loosen a injector line at the head. and crank engine if you have no fuel there then IP is for sure bad

crack the fitting on the filter housing and make sure you have pressure when you turn the key on. The lift pump will sound like it is running when they go out. The pump is a rotary pump which is designed to push not pull, one of the main flaws. Just because it sound like its running doesnt mean its pumping. If it sounds like it is turning faster or louder than normal before start up it is probably out. The gear, which is plastic by the way, strips and wont turn the rotary vanes and pump fuel, make sure that is good before you buy anything.
Have fuel at fitting on vp no fuel at injectors so pretty sure the vp is toast.
Im discouraged with the whole situation at this point. I was on my way to go bird hunting with some of my college friends that i havnt seen in a year when it died. Got it towed home for 130 bucks. just to make sure it wasnt air i pressureized the tank bled at filter housing and at vp cranked over still no fuel at injector lines. Have a lead on a 01 with under 5000 miles that was wrecked think i may be able to get that vp cheap. If not I was thinking a blue chip special x or their stock rebuilt unit. Just wondring if anyone has anything bad to say about theese pumps i know everything i have read about heese pumps so far is good. Just want to make sure that they are good pumps before i spend that much $$.
thanks for the help

Do not waste your money on a used OEM VP44. When new they were crap, and they never got any better with age.
Go spend your hard earned money on a rebuilt that is done properly with new cases, new computer, a steel shuttle liner in the rear housing, and from someone that knows how to build them.
Anything else is just going to buy you trouble.
When you install the new VP, also install a fuel pressure gauge on the fitting on your fuel filter so you know the new injection pump is being fed properly and will not just burn up from fuel starvation.
I see the properly rebuilt pumps go well over 250,000 miles and still be running like new. The key is quality first, and a solid clean fuel supply with enough pressure to keep fuel circulating through the VP and back to the tank so the pump cools.
