transmission can't find gear?

I have a 01 dodge 4x4 with the automatic and 81,xxx miles. The problems is that when I'm driving around town with the O/D on going about 40 to 50 mph the truck shifts up and down and can't seem to stay in anyone gear. Now if I give it fuel it will down shifts and drive normal until it drops in speed back to 40-50 mph and starts all over again. Is this a sign on needing a new tranny or I'm hoping that there is a cheaper fix to this problem. Thanks for any help

My '98 did that from when it was brand new.

Could be your governor pressure solenoid, a bad ground, or Dodge's factory shift programming.

The factory setting to switch in and out of OD is 47 mph. The only "problem" is you are driving around close to shifting speed. If you want your tranny to last push the OD off button until you're going 55 mph or more and intend to keep going that speed.

That is great info, I will keep that OD off and will check the grounds. I would like to check the solenoid but unsure as to were it is at?
