HELP! My transfer case will allow me to shift out of 2wd to 4 lo only. Then it won't let me shift bacK! There's a lot of grinding and I have to shut the truck off to have any hope of reaching 2wd. After re-engaging 2wd - it sometimes "jumps out" to neutral in the case! Anybody ever heard of this? I guess I'm probably gonna need a new case but thought I'd check to see if anyone has heard of this before.

 

Do you use your 4wd in 4hi and lo? Was it working previously fine? How are you attempting to shift the transfer case?

 

When you shift to 4 Lo from 2WD, do not dally in the Neutral range, punch it right through, but MAKE SURE your transmission is in Neutral, Same with coming back from 4Lo to 2WD
When switching to 4Hi from 2WD, the transmission is best left in drive at very low speeds. Same with shifting out for 4Hi, do it with the vehicle in gear. It should come out easily.
If the vehicle transfer case has not been shifted very often, gears can be a little cantankerous to engage.

 

Check the vacuum line to the transfer case shift solenoid.

 

Try checking the range fork in the T/C. Some models use nylon inserts that wear out and cause same symptons you are experiencing.
