Stuck in Baja
Stuck in Baja
I have a 2003 3500 4x4 70000miles. 6 miles down the road yesterday and the motor quit. Started again, stalled in seconds. Popped the hood checked fuses and relays, look to see if mice had eaten anything, stripped wire insulation... Started fine then drove back to town , no problems. Checked everything again, drain some fuel from separator, looked clean, no water. Started up fine again, got 10 miles out of town and quit again.
Now it won't start. Turns over, but won't go. Help!!!! We are stuckin San Juanico, Baja.

Just got back from the mecanico. We pullled the lift pump, blew some air thru it, put a direct 12 volt to it and it ran. put it back in the truck, drove it for 15 miles went great. As I got back into town the motor quit on me, started back up a couple times to make it back to the mecanico, now wont stay on. I'm going back in and will check it with a direct wire in position, may be I'll need to hot lead it to limp back home ?? I'll also check the "codes with the key". I don't want to spend several hundred dollars to get a new pump sent here, if thats not it.
Sorry to hear of your plight. I was @ Scorp in '88,not a nice place for a breakdown. I wish I knew of somebody going your way. When you get back,go with an aftermarket pump mounted on the frame rail.

If the pump runs as normal with 12V on it, it might be a relay going out. Over time the contacts will oxidize, making intermittent contact, just before they become insulators.

rich, when your which went out , a relay or the lift pump itself? I checked everything in the box, all is like new I traced the wires from the top of the pump and everything goes to a box mounted on the motor. Do I concentrate on the electrical or pump replacement? It seems now like the system works fine until it gets up to operating temp, cuz it is starting now. There is no part in all of Baja, the mecanico spent all day on the phone checking.
Shoot me an address and I'll send you a functional lift pump in the morning. Free of charge. It came off my 03 when I went with the gdp unit and it worked perfectly. Lot of miles on it, but at least itd get you home.
direct feed won't help it.....but beating the C out of it may get it going. I've gotten alot of tow in's started by bumping the starter so it goes into 20 sec prime mode and tapping the pump with a hammer. Might get you along for a little bit of time. You'll hear it start to run if the "CPR" method works.
Cameroneod,
The best bet would be to DHL to Ciudad Constitucion, Baja California Sur. A friend is going to go in on Tuesday and can pick it up at the DHL office there.
I'll send you my e-mail on a private message and I can give you his name and mine for an authorized pick up. If DHL says it will be there before Tuesday I might be able to get a ride in earlier.
