stuck in 5th gear

I have a 95 2500 4x4 Cummins stuck in 5th gear. Went to downshift yesterday morning & it would not come out of 5th. The clutch still works, & by putting it in low range I could load it on a trailer, but the shifter won't budge, & the tranny is stuck in 5th. Any ideas? Thanks

sounds like the 5th gear nut backed off. Do a search and you should get alot of info for this item in the forums and some good how to tips.

5th gear nut

I'm no expert, but when I dropped 5th gear nut, I just couldn't get into 5th gear, could put the shifter in the location of 5th gear, but NOTHING....
would be shocked if dropping the 5th gear nut would LOCK YOU into 5th gear.

Sounds like the shifter is stuck. I would take off the lid and look, the actual gear box might be just fine, one of the linkages must be binding.

I had this happen some years ago in a Toyota- coming off the highway after a 6 hour ride it would not shift out of 5th- coaxing it with increasing force moved the lever out but the transmission stayed in. It was a fun drive home across town in 5th

The spring for the shift mechanism was too weak and a shift fork was slightly bent which jammed it in gear and allowed the lever to slip. Seems more likely a bent fork to me.

shifter may have just rode up over it's slot in the fork. i have seen it happen several times. just pull the shifter and check that before you go too far or spent too much

I have a copy of the NV4500 Service Manual. I used it to rebuild my 4500 in my 98.5
I had the 5th gear nut back off and the destruction of 3 pilot bearings. I replaced the main shaft with the 5th gear upgrade, and changed to the pilot bushing, and have not had a lick of trouble out of the box since.
Any particular views that you need?

I found the TSB's on the 5th gear nut, & they show it pretty well but I haven't found much on the shift mechanisms other than one view of the 5th gear fork. Any views of the top would be great. Thanks

after removing the rear cover on the tranny, and tinkering for an hour, I noticed a small piece of the synchronizer is keeping it in 5th. If I push it in with a screwdriver it allows it to come out of 5th & into nuetral. At that point it will go in & out of all gears (except 5th) with no problem. as soon as it's put back in 5th, it is stuck again. Dodge wants $660 for the synchronizer assy, so replacing it is not a good option. Does anyone have any experience with these?
