stub axle doesn't seem right, '96 2500
Due to wife being laid off can't do the EMS kit yet so I'm back to the cartridge bearing for now. Pulled off the old one and cleaned up the stub axle and noticed that there is a ring protruding from it's face that seems to be interferring with the bearing seating all the way in and the face of axle seems to be ground down (can't tell if it's just machining marks or not). Does this look normal? Is the stub wasted? Could that protruding ring be the remains of the bearing? I gotta get this thing going, been driving the Brother In Law's 454 Suburban and 6MPG is killing me driving 68 miles to work. I need my Cummins back!!
I think I got it taken care of. The ring that is protruding towards the threaded end of the axle was about 1/8" deep. I put some bluing on the axle shaft and white paint on the ring and assembled. Ended up with white paint on the outer edge of the center of the of bearing and the scaring in the bluing ended about 1/8" from bottoming. Measure and eyeballed the old bearing and the seal was pressed in about 1/8" and was rotating with the outer flange not staying in place like on the new one. Ground off the lip, repainted and blued and it bottoms now with the paint on the bearing and scaring in the bluind ending perfectly even. Hopefully this was the cause of the previous bearing failures and this one is perfect when I do the EMS kit.
