strange howling noise front driver's side

in the last 3 days or so i have noticiced an intermittent howling type noise from the front on the driver's side (passenger told me she can tell it was from my side)...the howling can be heard as i accelerate from a dead stop ....it dissapears when i hit cruising speed

well..maube its my imagination but i "think" i cabn hear a lil bit of the howlign when my truck is statianry and in park...i opened the hood and got my ear to the pump and couldnt hear it but as i walk around the fan i can kinda hear it...but all that could be my imagination

there are NO fluid leaks of any sort and NO stains on any tubes...power and fuel economy is normal...so is smoke levels and all that...this howling occurs during all types of driving whether i am turning or in a perfectly straight line ( so i dotn think its steerign or power steering)...transmission is working and shifting fine too

some history: it did get cold here last two days and i was in GA for 8 weeks and never heard it 2nd...truck needs an overflow valve (140 000kms) 3rd a wheel bearing hub got changed in the summer but the tire did NOT...i think the tire is damaged and finally howling cause i was driving with the bad wheel bearign for agood month

gimme a couple ideas what to inspect ...i have a week off

ps it has gotten quite cold here lately and i never noticed the noise till this winter....also my drivebelt was squeeking in the mornings since summer but has gone away lately ( i never changed it)

i did a search and found stuff on "intermediate carrier bearings" also some "heater hose" and also "power steering pump

most of the hooting sounds happened to guys running 3rd gens and up...i didnt read a single thread where this happened to a 12 valve

i hope someone can chyme in

I'm suspecting a wheel bearing again.

Mr. T,

I noticed you have a 4x4 and that sparked a connection with something I read on a Ford forum once. The guy on the Ford forum had a howling noise which ended up front driveshaft related. I don't recall what the exact problem was but I remember the result. He was going down the highway and had the front driveshaft let go from the front axle. The axle hit the road, jammed against the pavement and made the front end of his truck jump up as the driveshaft pivoted on the t-case. The t-case u joint let go and gravity took over bring the truck down on a near vertical driveshaft. He ended up having to replace the yokes, the driveshaft, the bearings, and hammering a large dent out of his floorboard. I would check out your 4x4 for anything unusual.

It sounds like a wheel bearing to me, too. To be safe (and since you've got the week off) remove the front driveshaft and take it for a spin. This will at least eliminate any front carrier bearing and/or front driveshaft noise.

We had a hollowing noise once and it ended up being a dry pumpkin. I would give it a check just to be sure. Also, sometimes the u-joints don't make any noise or move when you check them. You have to take the drive shaft out and really check it good.

bought some fluid for the diffs so gonna see if that helps...i havent touched the diff fluid in 100 000kms so maybe it "might " be time

the thing is i cant event tell if its front or back that the sound is coming from...definitely drivers side though

its also dependent on how fast i accelerate...if i go nice and smooth and slow from a stop then its never there....but i can hear like a "woo woo wooo and goes away when i mash the throttle a bit more....and it doesnt even happen every time...maybe 1/5 accelarations

Thuroghly inspect the boost hoses. They can be sly little boogers, untill they let go all the way-- kinda sounds like a tire exploding under the hood Its probly the one thats a pain, driverside at the aftercooler up under the washer tank.

Ive herd lots of descriptions for this one. One guy said "my truck farts going up hill", sure enough I found a hose starting to slip out of a clamp.....

Good luck!

Maybe tonight i can try to get some pics to you. Lay under the front of the truck and look up. Near the frame rails, you will see some "boots" attached to the bottom of the aftercooler on each side. They have a band clamp at each end, or really a T-bolt clamp. They have a 1/4" nut to tighten them (7/16" hex size, needs a deep well socket).

The other sugestions are good pionts, but this is an easy fix (relativly) and is common enough that Id check first. You should see some of the boot sticking out of the clamp all the way around, like on the rad hoses. If the end of the boot is under the clamp, it may be pulled out enough to leak a little.

thanx man......believe it or not i think i found it tonight and its kinda silly....i mentioned earlier than i could hear some sort of mini distant howling while the truck just idled....

well i stepped out the truck today while it was running and noticed that i can hear that annoying distant howling coming from the stacks...i looked under the truck and see that alot of my piping under there was getting quite rusty.....so i think its a leak.....

i just hope that the turbo isnt crapping...but it spools up fine while driving...i'll have a closer look tommorow
