Any ideas on setting my TPS? My little 92 Club Cab has developed quite a taste for these things. I'm on my 4th TPS in 5 years. <br>I had it replaced on a road trip last year. The tech set it a bit low so &quot;it would work better&quot;. The result was no OD with any throttle input. <br>After a recent trip, the tranny would shift in and out of OD until I was over 50 mph. I tried poking a wire with the meter and resetting it this morning. It was sitting at 1.03 volts and returned to the same setting when I moved the throttle. Afterwards, it would not hit OD at all. <br><br>I'm really getting tired of messing with this stinking thing. <br><br>Any hints for dealing with this?<br>

 

I had simular problems a while back on my 92 after having the TPS replaced by the ******* until I got smart and decided to do the work myself.

I took apart a fairly new TPS and cleaned it with contact cleaner and lubed pin and reinstalled top. I then checked the speed sensor on the transmission and found the nut was split that held the unit into the transmission. I replace the speed sensor along with the trans temperature sender reset the voltage to the TPS at .95 volts and the transmission has shifted flawlessly for over 18 months now.

I would first make sure that the connections to the TPS, trans temperature sensor and speed sensor were clean. Spray with contact cleaner and put some diaelectric grease in them if you want to and plug back in.

Also take the top of the TPS off and clean with contact cleaner, make sure you clean the area where the pin rotates and put a little grease in the cup and reglue top back on.

The speed sensor is about $60.00 and the trans temperature sensor is about $12.00. A whole lot better than $200 more for the TPS and another $100 or so for the ******* to install reset voltage and still have a poor shifting transmission.

You will need a digital VOM to set voltage.

I'll try to check it all out tomorrow. I've got a couple old ones to fiddle with. <br>The speed sensor failed a little over two years ago but seems to be fine at this time. I'll need to dig into the shop manual to find my tranny temp sensor. I've got one in a cooler line but I think that's for the fan powered super cooler under the bed. <br><br>My little truck has 223,000+ miles on it and the tranny shifts just fine. I'll be digging into it soon to flush it out. When I do, I'll try to add a drain plug. I HATE dropping the pan.

 

how do you crack the TPS open? I've been fiddling with one of 'em and all I can figger is that you've got to carve the resin out of the little recess on top and go in from there. <br><br>Am I missing something?

 

feets. Your not missing anything. Dig the resin out with a very small precision screwdriver exacto knife or dremel tool. I used some epoxy to reattach top.<br><br>Jim

 

you dont really need to dig it out just bathe it in contact cleaner and move the actuator a whole bunch of times and drain it out ,clean it off with a rag and putter back in.
